No cooking or cleaning required.

There are countless ways to treat Mum on Mother’s Day, but you can’t go wrong if it’s all about great food and drinks – and Mum, of course. If hosting isn’t in your skillset (we can help with this guide, if you’re tempted) and no one else is putting their hand up, it’s a great chance to take Mum out on the town. This way, no one needs to cook or clean, everyone wins with a meal out, and Mum leaves happy (just make sure she’s not left with the bill).

There are a few things to consider in the planning, though. The most important? No one gets to put their demands on the choice of venue except for Mum. Whatever she’s into – a harbour view, killer cocktails, live music and line dancing – that’s what she gets, whether the rest of you like it or not. Another thing to factor in is the right setting, particularly when it comes to volume – somewhere that’s conversation-friendly is ideal.

To help pinpoint the best venues for Mother’s Day, we’ve pulled together a few Mum-appropriate bars, restaurants and pubs in each major city around the country. Some are even offering set-price meals for the occasion. Just know that many venues get chockers on Mother’s Day, so be sure to book ahead. Or you could go one better and make the outing the day before. Taking her out on the Saturday not only beats the rush, but also gives Mum Mother’s Day all to herself. And that might just be the best gift you can give.
