Why you goIf only more beach bars were like Al Lupo. Then again, Greg Leaver – one of the owners of this sleek, modern parlour opposite Leighton Beach – isn’t like most bar owners. His Fremantle establishments Strange Company (adult and polished) and Ronnie Nights (freewheeling and fun) both brought new ideas to Freo’s drinks scene. Venue number three upholds Greg’s reputation for doing things his way, and it brings a contemporary food and drink package to the coast minus any maritime clichés. In co-owner Alex Brinis, Greg has a like-minded comrade committed to making Al Lupo work. It certainly helps that Alex, like Greg, calls the area home.
Why you stayMost venues by the water want to direct your gaze to what’s happening outside. While Al Lupo’s widescreen windows offer terrific vistas, the view indoors is equally attractive. Attention to detail defines Al Lupo as a bar of substance. Reclaimed timber clads the walls. A sunroom dotted with stools and benches has the best seats in the house. Pull up a chair at the Greek-marble bar or the communal dining table and your place will be set with elegant plates, thick linen napkins and fine glassware. It’s a setting you can get dressed-up for or come as you are, feet sandy from a dip in the ocean. Regardless of your attire, dialled-in staff move swiftly to make you feel welcome.

What drink to orderWhile this might be a setting that screams “Spritz me!”, the cocktail list offers fresh takes on the drinking-by-the-beach theme. (That’s not to say that well-drilled bartenders won’t mix you up an Aperol Spritz or any other classic, however.) The Ravello, for instance, is a tall, revitalising potion made with the apéritif Dubonnet, limoncello liqueur and prosecco – just the thing you’d want to gulp in the Amalfi Coast town the drink shares its name with. The tangy Indian summer drink Jaljeera gets reimagined using cumin-flavoured vodka and lime and pineapple juices. Local breweries dominate the beer list that takes in everything from non-alcoholics to refreshing sour beers. In a cool twist, all tap beers are the same price ($10). The wine list is best described as breezy, both in terms of the by-the-glass selections and their neighbourhood-friendly prices.
What to pair it withThe chefs subscribe to the same alt-coastal thinking as the bartenders. Like any self-respecting beach bar, Al Lupo has squid on the menu, only here it’s dressed with XO sauce (a spicy Asian condiment made, resourcefully, with salami offcuts) and dotted with Thai basil leaves. Elsewhere, plump steamed mussels are a smart addition to a hearty chickpea braise. The cooking is sharp and the menu is deep enough to make Al Lupo a destination for eaters as well as drinkers. Still, the kitchen can also play it casual. The signature hot dog starring an oversized lamb sausage protruding out of a soft white bun is perfect one-handed snacking. You’ll want an order of the house focaccia, too – the perfect thing for mopping up sauces.

Regular’s tipAl Lupo’s Monday night pasta deal is one way to start the working week right. Your shrewd $30 investment gets you a bowl of the good stuff, plus a matching glass of wine. The pasta changes weekly, but there will always be both a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option featuring housemade pasta: think tagliatelle with zucchini, peas and mint, or a textbook carbonara.
Make it fancyWhile nice prices are part of Al Lupo’s schtick, the cellar is on standby for impromptu celebrations. Among the bigger-ticket bottles you’ll find in the wine racks, Champagne from some of the region’s best-known houses (Billecart-Salmon, for instance), top-shelf Margaret River chardonnays, and fancy Barolos, among other Italian trophy wines.
Who to takeDespite its desirable oceanside postcode, Al Lupo does polished without pretension. All the ingredients are here for a lovely date night, but you’ll also enjoy yourself just fine if you’re here with friends or even on your own. In short, Al Lupo is an all-rounder – the kind you wish was closer to home. Like we were saying, if only more (beach) bars were like Al Lupo.
