The trends we’ll be drinking to in the year ahead.

New year, new you, new something-something in your glass. Nobody truly knows what the future holds, but the present and the past might offer up a few clues. And when it comes to the trends we’ll be drinking to in 2024, that’s exactly where we looked.

In lieu of a crystal ball, we sought out some insight from the experts on the Dan’s Daily team to get the inside scoop on what’s to come. From blue bubbly and Italy’s take on fruity beer to a highbrow cocktail collab from yours truly (uh-huh) that brings the bar to your place, here are eight of the trends we’re tipping for a big 2024.

1. A-listers on the drinks list

Mark it down: 2024 will be the year the celebrity co-sign gets the credit it deserves. Gone are the days when slapping an A-lister’s mug on any old spirit or suds label was par for the course – the new breed of celeb-endorsed brands are the real deal. Take 818 Blanco Tequila as an example.

No matter your feelings towards the Kardashians, it’s hard to deny that it’s earning favour with the critics, racking up a slew of international awards since launch. A product of Kendall Jenner’s entrepreneurial spirit (and the whole 818 team), this tequila is made from premium agave grown on family-owned farms in Jalisco, Mexico. We expect to see 818 riding the tequila wave well into the new year.

2. Sparkling with a twist

Across the Atlantic, Luc Belaire is the latest French bubbly on every rapper’s lips. With shout-outs from Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and cheerleader-in-chief Rick ‘Teflon Don’ Ross, this historic maison has rapidly become one of the USA’s top-selling sparklings. But credit is also owed to the innovations taking place within the winery. Case in point: Belaire Bleu.

This sapphire-hued sparkling (yes, actually) gets its unique colour and tropical berry sweetness from ugni blanc (AKA trebbiano) and colombard grapes, which are almost exclusively used for brandy rather than wine.

3. Local fizz

It’d be way too easy to credit inflation (or some other economic trend we don’t like or understand) with the rising popularity of Aussie sparkling. The truth is far simpler – it’s bloody good stuff. Ovata by Oakridge is the latest addition to the category. An eye-wateringly great-value collab between Australia’s best winery (yes, we can verify that claim) and one of the country’s most respected sparkling wine specialists in Teresa Heuzenroeder, we’re tipping Ovata for a huge year ahead.

Crafted from premium parcels of Yarra Valley chardonnay and pinot noir, this sophisticated drop will surely have a certain French wine region looking over its shoulder. Aromas of Fuji apple, citrus curd and white florals are underscored by toasty brioche notes and a shimmering, creamy texture. Oh, and the bottle is drop-dead gorgeous. Expect to see this one popping up – and off – at celebrations and Instagram stories everywhere.

4. Chūhai to keep rising

Premixed chūhai (the Japanese abbreviation for Shochu Highball) ended the year on a high note, and we reckon that trajectory will only continue into 2024. Convenient canned versions of the lemon chūhai have already won plenty of friends with their subtle sweetness, clean citrus aroma and sparkling freshness. Out to win a few more is Okinawa brewery Monsuta, whose latest release has arrived right on time.

A crisp, balanced blend of vodka, shochu, soda and lemon, Monsuta Lemon Chūhai represents another giant step onto the global stage for the popular Japanese drink. The accessory of the summer? It might just be.

5. Fruit-driven brews

Fruity beer was big in 2023 (just as we predicted). Like all good trends, it’s evolving over time, with plenty of new takes joining the ranks. The rise of fruit flavours in beer is definitely set to continue, but we’re now seeing subtler takes that retain more of that traditional beer profile. And this brings us to the Peroni Stile Capri

One of the defining features of Italian cuisine is its unwavering respect for individual ingredients. But with such wonderful produce to work with, can you blame them? After all, that very attention to detail is what makes things like Peroni Stile Capri possible. The iconic brewery’s latest lager uses the zest of sun-drenched Sicilian lemons and olive leaves to create a lighter, fresher and less bitter beer. Although we wouldn’t exactly call it a ‘flavoured’ beer, that subtle lemon scent shows up in this classic Mediterranean style.

6. The after-dinner limoncello

Speaking of Italy and their lemons, we’re getting heavy limoncello vibes for 2024. Italian stuff just has a way of being timeless. If our Instagram feeds are anything to go by, the official after-dinner drink of the islands off The Boot will be next year’s must-have freezer item.

Our pick comes from Molinari, whose Limoncello Di Capri is widely considered the OG. Crafted from Sorrento lemons on the island of Capri, and made according to the original recipe, it makes a great addition to any cocktail. Mix it with some gelato and prosecco in a Strawberry Patch, or have a crack at this delicious Turkish Delight Sipper. And for the purists, it’s pretty unbeatable ice-cold straight out of the freezer, too.

7. Canned wine spritzers

Forget lo-fi wine, we’re tipping 2024 as the year that wine got its big break from tradition. Following the relentless success of premixed drinks, alcoholic seltzers and pretty much anything in a can, we’re expecting a new wave of canned wine spritzers to meet the demands of a new generation of wine-lovers.

Zoomers and their Millennial counterparts have shown a marked preference for sweeter, more refreshing flavours in their wines of choice. They’ve also proven to be somewhat uninspired by wine’s conventional (i.e. stuffy) connotations of sophistication and refinement, opting to explore the category through modern and disruptive brands that meet their tastes and suit their lifestyles. TLDR? Wine, but make it portable, spritzy and easy-drinking.

Canned wine spritzers are the logical next step, and Riot Wine Co.’s is one to watch. A glorious blend of wine, soda, fresh grape juice and luscious berry botanicals, their Big Berry Riot Spritz Cooler is a ripper. Tasting notes include summer arvos, the great outdoors and fuss-free flavour. Sign us up!

8. The elevated cocktail mixer

Above my great-uncle’s barbecue is a gift-shop placard that reads: “There’s no place like this place anywhere near this place, so this must be the place.” It’s cheesy, but there’s truth in the idea that home is where the heart is. Add ‘best local cocktail joint’ to that sign because Aussies flocked to a huge variety of DIY mixers in 2023. We reckon they’ll take it to the next level in 2024 – we’ve even cooked up something special for it.

That’s right. Dan’s Daily (AKA us) has partnered with the cocktail mixer maestros at Mr Convenient to create a summer tipple your local mixologist would be proud to serve – the Yuzu and Blood Orange Sour. Citrusy, with complex notes of rooibos, rose water and orange blossom, this mixer is a bonafide recipe for a good night in. It’s made with the freshest ingredients, so all you need to do is add a splash of your favourite spirit (we reckon tequila is best, but gin or rum are just as delicious) and enjoy.
