And no, we’re not talking about hazy pale ales.

About this time last year, we let you in on a little secret that was set to revolutionise the world of beer and reintroduce it to a new generation that tends to turn its nose up at all things malty and heavy: fruity beer. Beer for non-beer drinkers was arriving on our shores and in liquor-store fridges across the land, brewed specifically to serve the palates of those who wanted easy, fun and vibrant drinking experiences.

A year on, fruit-laden beers, which combine the classic flavour profile of hops and malt with lashings of juice and natural flavourings, are an ever-growing category. Wedged at a perfect point in the market to cater to both beer and hard seltzer drinkers, it’s a segment that’s set to explode, with big-name breweries and craft producers alike dipping their toes into the waters. Now, two of those breweries are expanding the scope of the fruity beer category even more, with five new concoctions set to liven up your summer.

1. Carlton Dry Zesty Lemon

Lemons, limes and crisp beers have been a beloved pairing since time immemorial. In fact, they were really the first port of call when big breweries started expanding into the world of fruit-tinged beers, but were essentially just your regular old beer with a gentle hint of citrus. Here, we’ve got a full fruity beer, with the lemon flavour coming hard and fast. The first cab off the rank in Carlton Dry’s expanded fruit range is this Zesty Lemon, which gives a Shandy vibe with a hit of what tastes like homemade lemon squash.

2. Botany Brew Fruity Beer Tropical

Bursting onto the scene with its Tropical Ales, Botany Brew has taken the natural next step and expanded into the world of easy-drinking fruity lagers, debuting with this Fruity Beer Tropical – a crisp style imbued with layers of tropical fruit flavours, namely those on the sweeter side like guava and passionfruit. This is one for those who love things sweet and indulgent, without being too heavy on the palate during all those summer catch-ups.

3. Carlton Dry Flavoured Tropical Passionfruit

If the bright fruity flavours you commonly find in XPAs are your kind of vibe, Carlton Dry Tropical Passionfruit will be right up your alley. Nostalgic and vibrant, it’s giving the retro flavour of a Passiona, combining brightness and sweetness thanks to added hints of pineapple and mango.

4. Botany Brew Fruity Beer Yuzu Citrus

The East Asian citrus yuzu, which boasts flavours that sit somewhere between a lemon, mandarin and grapefruit, has become a darling ingredient among brewers and distillers in recent years thanks to its bright zestiness and more balanced sweetness. Naturally, then, it’s a perfect playmate with beer, which is why Botany Brew opted to make it the second flavour in its growing array of fruity options in this Yuzu Citrus release. We’re on board.

5. Carlton Dry Juicy Mango

The last flavour in Carlton Dry’s decidedly retro new line of fruit-flavoured beers, Carlton Dry Juicy Mango channels the rich, sweet mangoes and ice cream we looked forward to every summer growing up. Rich and juicy like a hazy pale ale, it carries just the right amount of malt and hop characteristics to keep things from getting overwhelmingly sweet, while remaining so drinkable you’ll probably forget you’re drinking beer altogether.
