A Spicy Mosey Margarita

Bartending legend Matt Stirling gives us an elevated fruity beer take on the seriously trending Spicy Marg.

About the cocktail

Margaritas are seriously trending right now. Spicy Margs, especially. Seizing the buzz, Matt Stirling (of the seriously brilliant Caretaker’s Cottage in Melbourne) has tinkered with the recipe and introduced it to the newest style of beer – fruity beer.

“What could capture the moment more than a Margarita sharing a glass with bubbly and bright Mosey Passionfruit?” asks Matt. We can’t think of anything better! For those who haven’t tried fruity beer yet, its light and refreshing flavours lend themselves beautifully to mixed drinks like this one, which comes to you hot off the press.

“This Spicy Marg uses the classic DNA of tequila, lime and agave,” Matt says. “A few dashes of hot sauce are optional for those looking to lift their spice game.” For those who err on the side of caution, a dusting of salt and Tajin spice mix on the rim of the glass will add a hint of spice without blowing anything up.

In the interest of balance, Mosey Passionfruit fruity beer provides a sweet and zesty counterpoint to the spice and a refreshingly moreish texture. “It’s that perfect combination of spice, sweetness and passionfruit-sherbert texture that makes for a drink asking to be sipped with high frequency,” Matt says.

Savoury, spice, sweet – what more could you want from a Spicy Marg?

The Spicy Mosey Margarita with a can of Mosey Fruity Beer

Ingredients

  • 30mL tequila
  • 20mL lime juice
  • 15mL agave syrup
  • 1–3 dashes of hot sauce (optional)
  • 150mL Mosey Passionfruit Fruity Beer
  • Garnish: salt, Tajin (chilli and lime seasoning) and half a passionfruit

Method

  1. In a small shallow dish, add equal parts salt and Tajin and combine
  2. Rub a piece of lime on the rim of a tall glass and roll in the salt mix
  3. To a cocktail shaker, add tequila, lime juice, hot sauce and agave syrup
  4. Add ice and shake
  5. Strain into your glass and top with Mosey Passionfruit
  6. Garnish with half a passionfruit

Dan’s top tips

There’s nothing worse than a tepid cocktail, so ice is key. Make sure you have plenty on hand for mixing and serving. The lower the temperature, the more stable your bubbles and flavours are, so fill up that ice tray well ahead of time.
