A cocktail made with strawberry gelato and limoncello? Yes, please.

About the cocktail

  • Sometimes the perfect cocktail just needs to be sweet and cold. There. We said it. And now that the weather is well and truly heating up, this next cocktail collab, according to our wonderful collaborator Lucinda Price, AKA Froomes, is the perfect “frolicking-in-a-meadow-on-a-spring-day” drink. Hard agree.
  • If you haven’t met Froomes, let us tell you she’s freaking funny. This makes sense as she’s a comedian and writer. Have a listen to her and Flex Mami’s podcast Flex & Froomes for some true belly-ache funnies. Describes herself as “happy, cheeky, frog-like” and “open to interpretation”, Froomes is exactly who we want to be sharing a cocktail with. But if she had to share a cocktail with anyone in the world? You best believe it’s Sarah Jessica Parker. “She is drinking a Cosmopolitan, but she isn’t judging me for having something even more fruity, because she is a supportive queen. I’d probably tell her to dump Big and it might escalate into a big fight, but we’ll make up over fried eggs tomorrow.”
  • Speaking of fruity cocktails, let’s chat about Froomes’ delish cocktail, the Strawberry Patch. A refreshing mix of limoncello, strawberry sorbet and prosecco, this cocktail is a real summer crowd-pleaser. It’s sweet, tart, ice-cold AND there’s gelato in it, so everybody wins. It’s also super cruisy to make – just chuck three ingredients into a blender (or use a stick blender) and serve. “These flavours taste like frolicking in a beautiful, big meadow – like the old Windows screensaver – on a spring day,” says Froomes. “It makes me scrunch up my nose and want to go ‘mm WEE’ because it tastes truly delicious. It’s just cute and carefree.”
  • We could see this drink being sipped at Christmas lunch, or with some friends pre-dinner on a deck overlooking a body of water. But, whatever you do, make sure you’ve got the tunes going. “We’re definitely listening to ‘FROOMY FRIDAYS’ – my magnum opus Spotify playlist with 3,000 loyal listeners,” explains Froomes. “We’ve got Sneaky Sound System, Gwen Stefani and Candice Alley… but if we’re talking specifics, it’s Too Young by Phoenix.”

Lucinda’s, AKA Froomes, top tips

  • Look, there’s not much to this cocktail, it's pretty much three ingredients blended, so our top tips are kind of take-it-or-leave-it. But if you really want to elevate things, listen up.
  • Before you do anything, sort out your glassware and stick it in the freezer. That way you keep your cocktail frozen and delicious for longer.
  • When it comes to gelato picks, it’s really dealer’s choice. You could switch the strawberry out for other fruity sorbets, like a raspberry or even a mango, but our recco is definitely a top-notch strawberry. “Buy good-quality gelato,” Froomes urges. “The little strawberry seeds really elevate this drink.”
  • The Strawberry Patch is kind of a dessert cocktail, but if you’re looking to pair it with some snackage, Froomes has your back. “During our first proper lockdown in Sydney, my housemate made me a pink platter – pink clouds, fairy floss, taramasalata, pink crackers and strawberries,” says Froomes. “I’d make the same for her but include this drink and we could have it together, as I wouldn’t be forced to go crazy and rot in a 3x3 bedroom.” Or, you know, a packet of salty potato chips will do the trick, too.
