Classic and contemporary, fancy but fun, polished yet personal – this luxe-casual steakhouse remains the casino’s safest bet with the firepower to turn any visit into a celebration.

Beer and Burger Pairing at Rockpool Bar & Grill Perth
Why you goIn the space of a decade, Rockpool – locals rarely refer to this sprawling bar and restaurant in the lobby of the Crown Metropol hotel by its full name – has established itself as Perth’s celebration central. This reputation is well deserved: Rockpool welcomes diners and drinkers seven nights a week, it enjoys a central location at the casino and next to Optus Stadium, and it has the street cred that comes from being opened by one of Australia’s highest-profile chefs. (Although founder Neil Perry isn’t as heavily involved with the restaurant as he once was, the pony-tailed one’s exacting standards remain a key strand in Rockpool’s DNA.)
Why you stayRockpool has the firepower to turn any visit into a celebration, any night of the week. A perpetual buzz electrifies the gilded dining room. Dressed-to-the-nines is the unofficial dress code among guests, while dapper, jacketed waiters reinforce that special-occasion vibe. Both the soundtrack and the lighting are turned down – all the better to hear you, my dear, as well as conjure a sense of intimacy. They don’t make places like Rockpool any more, especially in a part of the world where so many bars and restaurants lean fast, casual and loud. People come here expecting dinner and a show and Rockpool delivers.
What drink to orderThere are thirst-traps, and then there’s the drinks list at Rockpool, a comprehensive deep-dive into the wide world of drinks. Whether the moment calls for beer, wine, spirits or even something non-alcoholic, bartenders happily dispense suggestions and anecdotes to guests lucky enough to nab one of the four high seats at the bar (otherwise, a handful of tables are designated for walk-in bar guests). Cocktails run the gamut from sharply made classics with your choice of spirits – a bracing Martini made with your favourite Aussie gin, for instance – to contemporary creations such as the Ribena-hued Black & Smoke Margarita spiked with thyme. If digesting the 120-ish page wine list feels like too much reading for a Saturday night, head straight for the abridged highlights section or flag down a sommelier to play matchmaker between you and the cellar.

What to pair it withIf you weren’t already aware of Rockpool’s reputation as a steakhouse par excellence, the racks of rib-eyes that line the walkway demonstrate a serious commitment to sourcing (and dry-ageing) some of Australia’s best beef. This fastidiously handled steak – listed on the menu in forensic detail including producer, breed of cattle, cut and weight – is the cornerstone of a food offering big on old-school glamour, seen in the likes of prawn cocktail remixes, steak tartare, fettuccine with Bolognese and other classics given a luxe makeover. Burger fans, take note: the kitchen still serves that legendary Rockpool wagyu cheeseburger, but only during lunch service when a clipped bar menu is offered alongside the main carte.
Make it fancy“One of only three bottles in Australia.” “Rum of historic calibre.” “Quite simply described as a moment.” These passages in the carefully notated spirits list suggest that Rockpool’s bar is just as committed as the grill to sourcing the good stuff. If you’re looking to splash out, Rockpool’s liquor cabinet can oblige, whether you prefer your spirits neat or in cocktail format. (Although, if you’re going to drop more than $200 on a single nip of 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, it’s probably best appreciated neat rather than as an Old-Fashioned.) The cellar, meanwhile, has no shortage of splurge options. In addition to the rotating selection of rarities by the glass, a comprehensive range of magnums – including five-figure bottles of Champagne – is on stand-by for revellers who want to live (and drink) large.
Who to takeYour partner. Your parents. Your parents-in-law. Anyone you want to impress, really, especially if you’re planning on picking up the tab. While the restaurant can accommodate larger groups in its two private dining rooms, most of the tables are sized for couples and groups of four, making Rockpool an ideal (single and double) date destination. The key to making the most of a visit here, however, is assembling a crew that enjoys eating and drinking and isn’t averse to splashing some cash – this is very much a place where the more you spend, the more you get.
