Bloody good Bloody Marys? Right this way.

We know we’re up against a fiercely committed Mimosa camp when we say this, but brunch just isn’t complete without a Bloody Mary (or a Virgin Mary, of course). And we don’t mean any old vodka-spiked spicy tomato juice – we’re talking about deliciously balanced Bloody Marys made with serious TLC. There’s a difference, and we think it’s a big part of what makes or breaks the ultimate not-breakfast-or-lunch outing with friends.

We could share our many thoughts about why this beloved bright-red cocktail with its trademark celery stick (or Gilda, crispy bacon, pickles or other garnish, depending on where you are) seals every brunching occasion. But the fact is this classic drink also hits the spot pretty much any other time of the day – hot tip: it’s especially good at altitude. The Bloody Mary is also a drink for the people: whether you like yours mild or with the heat dialled right up, non-alcoholic or with the vodka subbed out for tequila, gin, Scotch or even sherry, there’s a Mary for you.

It’s safe to say that certain venues really get the Bloody Mary. Like the savvy distillers at Old Young’s in the Swan Valley, who use their own smoked vodka and spiced mix to put their distinctive stamp on this old favourite. Or if you want to see why so many people believe this is the supreme drink for Sundays, head to The Marrickville Hotel in Sydney for their Sunday Bloody Marys – they’re $12 from midday to 6pm.
