Set in Perth’s winemaking heartland, this new-school distillery is turning heads with its world-beating vodkas and gins, and a kitchen showcasing bold native flavours.

Bottle of Gin at Old Young’s
Why you goYou know and I know that the Swan Valley isn’t just one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions; it’s also the proud owner of a flourishing craft-beer scene. Following the 2016 opening of Old Young’s, the region’s resumé now includes “home to an internationally awarded distillery”. In a few short years, self-taught distiller James Young has established Old Young’s as a distillery to be reckoned with, thanks to his cleverly branded spirits, such as the Gingin Gin, that reference West Australian culture. After opening with just a tasting room, Old Young’s unveiled its next-door restaurant, Old Young’s Kitchen (open Thursday to Sunday) in early 2022, cementing its status as a destination distillery.
Why you stayBecause the international trophy-winning gins and vodkas are really good. And the staff at the tasting room look like they enjoy sharing the Old Young’s story almost as much as visitors enjoy tasting the spirits. While noise levels in this converted cottage are known to get up there, the space has been helpfully divided into smaller tasting areas to ensure guests get the most out of their visit. (You can play your part, too, by booking ahead for a 40-minute tasting for $5 per person that takes in seven spirits served neat and with selected mixers.) Like it says on the side of the box, the tasting room provides folks with a snapshot of what Old Young’s is about. Next door is where you go to sit and enjoy your drink at a leisurely pace.

What drink to orderAs well as serving guests pours of spirits, the kitchen-slash-bar also showcases the Old Young’s range via equally imaginative cocktails. Bar manager Pat Torres has slung tins and stirred drinks at key cocktail bars around Perth, and it shows in snappy drinks such as the tweaked Clover Club (the classic of gin and lemon juice gets a shot in the arm from elderflower liqueur) and Cafe-Roni, a Negroni remake with Old Young’s cold-drip coffee vodka. Otherwise, signature spirits can be enjoyed in one-litre carafes lengthened with high-end tonics and sodas. For designated drivers and those abstaining, there’s a handful of non-alcoholic cocktails and beers to choose from, while spirits can also be ordered as half-shots.
What to pair it withIn the same way native botanicals such as lemon myrtle and bush mint star in the distilling process, they also underscore the food offering. The menu features both the familiar – gnocchi in a lush dairy-free sauce, perhaps, or creamy croquettes of potato and Spain’s jamón ham – as well as dishes pitched at eaters happy to be challenged: crocodile chorizo sausage anyone? The feed-me option leaves the decision-making up to the chefs, while a kids’ menu is also available. And because we’re in Western Australia’s oldest grape-growing region, Swan Valley wines – as well as local beers – round off the menu.

Flavours at Old Youngs
Regular’s tipLike your gin? The distillery’s Juniper Society program – members receive a new bottle of limited-edition gin every month – ensures you get your Old Young’s fix on the regular. Even better, the gins distilled for the Juniper Society program are exclusive to members and can’t be tried at the tasting room or bought from a bottle shop – not even from your favourite Dan Murphy’s store. If all this talk of native flavours has struck a chord with you, consider carving out the time to visit nearby Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery. Meaning “place of the black swan” in the local Indigenous language, Nyoongar, Maalinup supplies Old Young’s with ingredients that have been sourced from First Nations communities around Australia.
Don’t leave withoutDespite its name, the Common Gin is anything but ordinary. Flavoured wholly with juniper from Tuscany in Italy – a hard-to-find ingredient that founder James Young had to travel to London to secure a steady supply of – this full-flavoured spirit slaps drinkers with a high-definition taste of juniper and is one of the few all-juniper gins available on the market. (Be warned: this navy-strength gin is bottled at a hefty 57.5% ABV, so approach with caution.)
Who to takeSeize the day! Like most of the spirit, beer and wine producers in the Swan Valley, Old Young’s is a daytime-only prospect, with the bulk of its customers dropping in on weekends (bold, or at least ill-prepared, is the party that comes here on a Saturday or Sunday without a booking). While the tasting room can feel and sound like a mosh pit, Old Young’s Kitchen is a far more family-friendly destination, with pets also welcome in the semi al fresco dining area.
