People enjoying at The Marrickville Hotel
Why you goThe Marrickville Hotel is the local that Marrickville always dreamed of. It’s a  place that works equally well for groups large or small, for lazy afternoon beers or cocktails deep into the night. Somewhere you can take your kids and  your dog, throw a birthday party, or turn up for a quick drink and wind up making a night of it with friends old and new. While the walls might be plastered with ’80s and ’90s Aussie paraphernalia – a teaspoon collection, a photo of Sydney Tower pre-sponsor, a Holden on a dusty outback road – nostalgia here serves as inspiration, not the theme. Sure, there’s VB and Reschs on tap, but there are also beers from Sydney’s ever-expanding craft brewery scene. And there’s nothing retro about the good times – whether you’re sat at the bar, in the carpeted section up front, or at the big tables under the fairy lights in the nautically themed courtyard out back, there’s always a spirit of celebration bubbling just under the surface. Whatever the time, whatever the occasion, The Marrickville Hotel has it covered.
Why you stay

This isn’t your average local. The team here has  previously launched celebrated venues in Redfern, not least Arcadia, which helped kick-start the small-bar movement in the inner south. The Marrickville Hotel has similar smarts, presenting like a pub but acting like a small bar, drawing the same kind of clued-in, dressed-down crowd, plying them with no-nonsense food and drinks, then stepping it up for anyone who wants to get a little more serious. You might kick things off with a Reschs, sure, but your next schooner could be from The Grifter, Philter or Batch Brewing. And while there’d be no judgement if you asked for a rum and Coke, it’s more likely the denim-clad, mullet-sporting bar-staff will be topping up their house spirits with fresh apple juice or mixing together mezcal, Chartreuse, Aperol and lime for a Naked & Famous.

The trick, really, is in under-selling and over-delivering. The only hot food might be toasties, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be gussied up with house-made pickles, or that the antipasto plate won’t feature mortadella from local makers LP’s Quality Meats. And with the option to have staff order in Vietnamese fare for you from neighbouring Pho Phd, you’ll find that sticking around and soaking up the atmosphere is always a good option.

What drink to orderIt might seem like a long shot that the steamy inner west is the right place to order a Piña Colada, but The Marrickville Hotel is one of the few bars around that commits to juicing pineapple fresh for every glorious glass. Havana white rum and Coco López keep things on the straight and narrow, and the garnish of pineapple leaves and glacé cherries brings the requisite tropical tone. It’s best enjoyed out in the courtyard among plant life, mirror balls and lifebuoys.
What to pair it withIf you’re going lo-fi, start with a packet of Smith’s or a bowl of Nobby’s peanuts. For something with more bite, the sandwich press pumps out toasties with an edge – the Three-Cheese packs gruyère, two kinds of cheddar and beetroot relish, while the Ham Train adds smoky tomato relish and house-pickled zucchini to smoked cheddar and ham. Not satisfied? Tick the boxes on the paper Pho Phd menu and staff will make the order, then drop off the likes of spring rolls, lemongrass pork and Vietnamese fried rice when it’s ready. It’s takeaway, just not as you know it.

Why we love itThis is a place that puts enjoyment first. There’s no fuss, no nonsense – just good banter, cold beers, sharp cocktails and tasty food. With the basics taken care of, that means more time to spend with mates and less time queueing or poring over endless drinks lists. No wonder so many of Marrickville’s residents have made this their regular.
Regular’s tipYou might be tempted by the Povhattan on the signature cocktails list, but be warned that this $9 is exactly what it says on the packet – that is, Jim Beam rye and a maraschino cherry. You get what you pay for. For the rest, it’s worth  taking  notice of weekly specials: Mondays offer $12 Margaritas till 10:00pm, Tuesday offers $6 tinnies, Saturday is a day for $10 Spritzes, while Sunday is for $12 Bloody Marys.
Don’t leave withoutAdmiring the wall art. It’s not clear exactly where the team managed to track down the eclectic array of framed photographs and posters, but it channels ’80s and ’90s Australiana hard. There’s no better place to raise a glass to your youth than among grainy shots of Aussie landmarks, sports stars from years gone by and emblematic wildlife than right here. Speaking of wildlife, out in the courtyard (which features a closable roof for wet weather) there’s one large corner covered entirely in portraits of dolphins. Who knows why. But if you happen to know a Flipper super-fan, this is their holy grail.
