A West End institution, Udaberri was one of the first small bars in Adelaide, and its tricked-up gin and tonics and stellar Spanish-channelling food ensure it remains one of the best.
Set in a former Flight Centre, Udaberri is a trip to Spain that costs you a fraction of the price, and its Basque-style offering – with the Spanish region’s wines and tapas at the forefront – is just part of the reason for this bar’s success. It does exactly what a good wine bar should – maybe you’ve dropped in for just one gin and tonic, then, before you know it it’s midnight, you’ve eaten an entire meal, made friends with the DJ and a neighbouring table, and your feet are aching from the dance party now taking up most of the front bar.
Udaberri was the first place in South Australia to open under 2012’s small-bar changes, legislation spearheaded by its owners that made it easier and cheaper for small operators to get a licence. The roughly 150 other small bars that have since opened in Adelaide have Udaberri to thank, at least in part, for the opportunity. Udaberri celebrated its 10th birthday this year, but retains all the fizzing anticipation and camaraderie of a night out at the newest bar in town.
First, there’s the just-right playlist, often provided by a rotating cast of local DJs who always nail the mood. We also love the moody interior design – all wood and leather, and flattering lighting. The staff feel like old friends, and the broad drinks offering includes 20 G&T variations, with flavours ranging from citrusy marmalade to herbal chamomile. But what really deserves a shout-out at Udaberri is the food, and the best spot to eat it is at the chef’s pass for two. You’ve got the DJ to your left setting the tone, the kitchen in front pumping out fiendish snacks like crunchy patatas bravas, Spain’s moreish potatoes served with a spicy sauce, and your mate right next to you, sharing the meal and a bottle of something lovely. What more could you want?
