A West End institution, Udaberri was one of the first small bars in Adelaide, and its tricked-up gin and tonics and stellar Spanish-channelling food ensure it remains one of the best.

Why you go

Set in a former Flight Centre, Udaberri is a trip to Spain that costs you a fraction of the price, and its Basque-style offering – with the Spanish region’s wines and tapas at the forefront – is just part of the reason for this bar’s success. It does exactly what a good wine bar should – maybe you’ve dropped in for just one gin and tonic, then, before you know it it’s midnight, you’ve eaten an entire meal, made friends with the DJ and a neighbouring table, and your feet are aching from the dance party now taking up most of the front bar.

Udaberri was the first place in South Australia to open under 2012’s small-bar changes, legislation spearheaded by its owners that made it easier and cheaper for small operators to get a licence. The roughly 150 other small bars that have since opened in Adelaide have Udaberri to thank, at least in part, for the opportunity. Udaberri celebrated its 10th birthday this year, but retains all the fizzing anticipation and camaraderie of a night out at the newest bar in town.

Why you stay

First, there’s the just-right playlist, often provided by a rotating cast of local DJs who always nail the mood. We also love the moody interior design – all wood and leather, and flattering lighting. The staff feel like old friends, and the broad drinks offering includes 20 G&T variations, with flavours ranging from citrusy marmalade to herbal chamomile. But what really deserves a shout-out at Udaberri is the food, and the best spot to eat it is at the chef’s pass for two. You’ve got the DJ to your left setting the tone, the kitchen in front pumping out fiendish snacks like crunchy patatas bravas, Spain’s moreish potatoes served with a spicy sauce, and your mate right next to you, sharing the meal and a bottle of something lovely. What more could you want?

What drink to orderG&Ts are a specialty – did we mention there are roughly 20 versions? The list is broken down by gin style and flavour profile, with tonics and garnishes to match. The wine menu, meanwhile, has a strong by-the-glass selection covering South Australian classics and plenty of Spanish and Portuguese imports rarely found elsewhere in the city (the tempranillo section is unparalleled). Then there’s sherry, which seems to be having a moment in Adelaide, but has been a mainstay at Udaberri since day one. We love the rich Pedro Ximénez, all caramel and sultana flavours, and the salty, savoury notes of a chilled Manzanilla, both hailing from southern Spain.
What to pair it with The menu leans towards Spain’s Basque Country, kicking off with “little things” like croquetas and cured meats. Everything is savoury and salt-forward – just the sort of thing to complement the bold reds and fun fortified wines that dominate the drinks list. Highlights include the Spanish ham shaved directly off the bone and the steaks, contenders for the best in town, served with those crunchy patatas bravas. If this sounds meat-heavy, fear not – vegetarians are catered for with the likes of portobello mushrooms with sweet peppers and egg yolk. Be sure to end the meal with the creamy Basque-style baked cheesecake.

Why we love it As well as being a great place to eat dinner, Udaberri is well placed for pre-dinner drinks. It shares a laneway with other Adelaide hotspots, and is also conveniently close to the free inner-city tram network and train station, connecting you to all four corners of the city. Like at most West End bars, things can get rowdy on Friday and Saturday, but the weeknights are just as vibey. There’s Jenga on every table, and the pieces are always all there, which we like very much.
Regular’s tip Good luck getting in after 11pm on weekends – this place pumps.
Who to takeUdaberri is, without a doubt, Adelaide’s premier spot for first dates, with its wildly embellished G&Ts to explore, the little nooks upstairs in which to hide away and the oh-so-kind lighting. This is also a great place to catch up with that mate you’ve been meaning to see, or have a late-afternoon work meeting. Udaberri is a venue where you can pivot the night in any direction you want. Drinks with the girls? Sure. Or just perch at the bar with the day’s Wordle and get hints from the clever and friendly bartenders. They love to chat about food and wine or listen to your office gossip or break-up stories.
