Selection of diverse chardonnay wines

Bargains, benchmarks and serious quality, from $10 to $100.

We’ve banged on about chardonnay so many times that it’s pretty clear we’re big fans. It helps that this hardy white variety grows just about everywhere and can be made into a range of styles spanning lean and acid-driven to rich and buttery and everything in between. Factors like region, climate, picking times and winemaking methods will always influence a final wine, but this is especially true with chardonnay. That means there’s a pretty exciting spectrum of styles out there, so if you haven’t already embraced this great white, it’s absolutely worth exploring the options.

To help you do just that, we’ve pulled together some serious standouts across a huge array of styles, regions and prices. Expect flavours that stretch from bright citrus and crisp apple to ripe stone fruit, rich melon, nutty cashew and more. Most wines in this selection are Australian, but you’ll also find others from New Zealand, France, the US and beyond. And while chardonnay’s food-match options are endless, a few particularly great pairings to keep top of mind are grilled chicken, fresh seafood and creamy pastas (we love it with carbonara).

Starting at well under $20 and maxing out at $100, the following 50 chardonnays offer something for everyone. As always, each bottle’s label suggests where the style might lie, but, if in doubt, be sure to ask the staff in-store. They know the range inside out and might just point you to your new favourite white wine.

Chardonnay under $20Chardonnay offers incredible value at all price points, but you get a choice of solid options for well under $20 – the 19 Crimes Hard Chardonnay commonly sits around the $10 mark. The following 10 wines are simply a snapshot of the many options at Dan’s, and they cover various Aussie wine regions, particularly South Australia, as well as a top-seller from southern France.
Chardonnay under $30Once you get above $20, you get a choice of wines that really start to reflect their regions and offer deliciously polished styles. In this selection, you can choose from top Aussie chardy regions, such as the Yarra Valley and Margaret River, plus a cool-climate Tasmanian expression with the Josef Chromy, and the proudly bold style from Tony Bish in New Zealand.
Chardonnay under $50 Jump up to this price bracket and you’ll find often wines that reflect a single vineyard or even a special block on a site. More time is commonly taken with these wines – sometimes with slightly longer barrel ageing for development – and they offer a true taste of what these esteemed wineries do best. You can even dip into some top-value French Chablis here, too.
Chardonnay under $70 There are some pretty prestigious wineries included in this list, and the regions start to broaden here with the likes of the Adelaide Hills and Mornington Peninsula – two prime cool-climate regions for chardy. You can’t go wrong with this selection; just be sure to pair your pick with a memorable meal to really let it shine.
Chardonnay under $100 If you don’t usually spend this much on wine, we recommend convincing a few chardonnay-curious friends to go in on a bottle so you can experience it together. That might mean choosing a serious Chablis from this list or a Napa Valley icon like the Duckhorn, or perhaps an award-winning single-block wine, as seen with the Oakridge, or even a New Zealand benchmark.
