There are so many ways to show our mums how much they mean to us on 14 May – starting with pouring them their favourite drink.
1. For the mum who loves to stop and smell the roses (and drink rosé while she does it)
This mum is happiest when she has the whole family around for a garden soirée in the sun. In fact, if you compliment her on how good her roses are looking, she’ll be even happier. She’s a woman who dreams of holidaying in Provence and would never turn down a croissant with her morning coffee. She’s a gracious host and always ensures everyone’s glasses are topped up – in this case, with a bottle of Gerard Bertrand Source de Junon Rosé. This is one elegant wine. Housed in a voluptuously shaped bottle, it comes from organic vineyards in a historical region in southern France called the Languedoc, and it has a lovely bright pink colour. On the nose, the intensity of the fruit highlights the complex aromas of cherry and strawberry, with a cheeky hint of licorice to boot. If seafood is this mum’s jam, then a bottle of rosé couldn’t be a better accompaniment – did someone say prawns?
2. For the mum who loves any excuse to celebrate
Otherwise known as ‘The Mumm’ mum, this woman is the epitome of celebrating at the drop of a hat, and always (always) has Champagne chilling in the fridge. We don’t blame her – who knows when someone she loves might get out of a parking fine or finally work up the courage to ask out that cute guy at the local coffee shop? Everything can be celebrated if you believe it. Perhaps on Mother’s Day you can ensure you have a bottle on ice in her honour – cook a roast chicken or maybe serve some truffled brie with it to really make her day. So, what’s the difference between Mumm 4 and traditional Mumm? Mumm 4 is a modern reinterpretation of the Champagne maturation process – it’s breaking the rules in the best way possible. It’ll set you back less than Mumm’s vintage Champagne, but in some ways it’s even more interesting. This mature wine is clearly labelled to show the number of years it spent on lees (in contact with its dead yeast cells) rather than any specific vintage year. It has complex ripe aromas of yellow and white fruit, peach marmalade and buttercream, and it's fresh, lively and rounded.
3. For the mum who mysteriously ends up with a G&T in her hand before dinner
Get her: Roku Japanese Craft Gin
Mum! Where’d that G&T come from? You cheeky thing, you! This mum knows how to live, and she loves indulging in a pre-dinner gin and tonic to wet the whistle. If this sounds like a mum you know, perhaps a bottle of Roku Japanese Craft Gin is on the cards this Mother’s Day – she might even share it with you. Made with six botanicals (sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea and sanshō pepper), and crafted using centuries-old traditions by Japanese artisans, this gin will knock the socks off any G&T fan. Roku is produced in the Suntory Liqueur Atelier in Osaka, which is a specialised craft distillery for all Suntory spirits. It features four distinct types of pot stills and, in a process unique to Roku, the botanicals are distilled separately according to each feature to extract the best flavour and maintain their individual characteristics. It’s perfectly balanced and the ideal treat for mum, if we do say so ourselves.
4. For the mum who’s not like other mums, she’s a cool mum
Get her: Empire Fruity Beer Strawberry & Lime
She’s a proud fruity Spritz fan and tells anyone who will listen. She’s also probably up to speed on the latest TikTok trends and across the latest celeb goss before you are. This is a fun mum who enjoys something a little sweet and easy, and nothing’s easier than cracking a can of fruity beer. This drink could also be a great choice for the mum who’s always entertaining because it goes great in an Empire of the Sun cocktail. Imagine how excited the neighbours will be when she shakes up a funky little Spritz at the start of the dinner party. The Empire of the Sun cocktail was originally coined by the cocktail chief at Melbourne’s Caretakers Cottage, Matt Stirling, and is inspired by the original Gin Basil Smash. The addition of Empire Strawberry & Lime fruity beer gives this cocktail a refreshing crispness and length. Make sure you share the recipe with her when you hand over the fruity beer.
5. For the no-frills mum who says ‘I don’t want anything’ on Mother’s Day
Get her: Gordon’s Tropical Passionfruit Gin & Soda
Sure, she says she doesn’t want anything when May 14 rolls around, but we think a Passionfruit Martini-inspired gin would go down a treat. A pack of these will transport her to an exotic tropical holiday and give her a reason to put her feet up, and that’s what Mother’s Day is all about, isn’t it? She’ll love the fruity taste of passionfruit, which blends perfectly with the botanicals in the original Gordon’s London Dry. Plus, if this mum is not only indecisive but also short on time, this RTD is the perfect match. Crack one for her, pour it over ice, add some passionfruit as a garnish and make sure you tell her how much you appreciate her while you’re at it.
