Three top picks for Father's Day

Let me make it easy for you with major My Dan’s member savings and major Dad approval.

Lara is the Editor in Chief of Dan’s Daily. Each month, she scours the list of 300+ My Dan’s member offers to find her favourite deals – the bottles you’ll definitely want to grab while the price is right. When it comes to Father’s Day, some dads are all, “Oh, you don’t have to get me anything.” Not mine. Pedro lives for it – the cards, the food, the attention, and (most importantly) the gifts. He doesn’t just like a good present, he expects one. Socks? No. Novelty mug? Get lost. A thoughtfully chosen bottle he can proudly display until it mysteriously disappears? Now we’re talking.

This month, I’ve handpicked three winning bottles that pass the Pedro test – a rigorous process involving sniffing, sipping and the kind of approving nod that says, “Yes, you’ve done well.” Tough gig.

Father’s Day falls on September 7 – and all these My Dan’s member prices are on offer right now, all the way up to, and including, the day itself. So, forget the “World’s Best Dad” mug and upgrade Dad’s bar cart instead.

1. Cullen Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Here’s a hell of a pick for those dads who enjoy a big red. The 2023 Cab Sauv from Cullen has just landed in store and it’s a bloody classy drop from the country’s premier biodynamic producer – and it just might be the best red wine for Father’s Day. This cracking collectible is fruity, juicy, savoury and bold. It’s got gorgeous length, seriously silky tannins and the price is a certified steal. Tell Dad he can drink it now alongside a hunky wagyu steak, or let it age for two to three decades for something truly spectacular.
$79.99 each

2 The Balvenie 12YO DoubleWood Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Whisky is the classic Dad gift, but unless you know exactly what Dad likes, this aisle can be a minefield to navigate. Unlike some spirits (where you can be pretty sure about the general taste profile regardless of the brand), whisky varies wildly from region to region and producer to producer.

So, if you’re just a boy/girl, standing in front of the whisky aisle, asking it to give you a hint, I’ve got you. Go for something from a known high-quality producer that’s rich in flavour without being too heavy on the smoke. That peaty smoke is a real acquired taste.

My specific recco for a Father’s Day whisky gift? The 12-year-old DoubleWood from The Balvenie. This is just stunningly classic single malt Scotch. It’s aged in two types of oak – both American ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish ex-Oloroso sherry casks – which gives it a honeyed, fruity depth. So smooth, so drinkable, so giftable – especially at this insane My Dan’s price. Bonus tip: here’s a guide on how to drink The Balvenie with food.

3. Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling

In addition to the all-important gift, it’s a good idea to pick up a bottle of wine to drink together with Dad on Father’s Day. Especially because he’s unlikely to want to share the above options with you.

Of course, there are plenty of options, but this riesling is both certifiably delicious and massively on sale. Aussie riesling – especially those from Clare Valley – are usually dry, limey and full of acidity. We’re a big seafood family, and the Petaluma is just the crisp, floral drop to go with.

$36.99 each
