A line-up of beers that make great gifts for Father's Day

Dad has enough socks. Treat him to one of these excellent brews instead.

Remember when Father’s Day meant a $2 mug from the school stall, filled with chocolate and blind optimism? We do. And we cringe a little bit thinking about it.

No hate to the annual Father’s Day stall – lovingly (and somewhat chaotically) run by school parents with the best intentions – but let’s be real. Dad, the guy who drove us to every birthday party, stood freezing on the sidelines of our games, sat patiently in the car while Revenge of the Sith wrapped up (for the fourth time), and tried to explain the magic of pi (pastry, right?), probably deserved more than a Cherry Ripe and a novelty mug with “#1 Dad” printed on it in Comic Sans.

So, this year, instead of nobody’s favourite Bounty making an unwelcome appearance in a smashable ceramic mug, get him something to prove you know him better than your Year 3 self – his fave beer. Think of it as a cool stocking-filler on top of something grander. We’ve rounded up Dad’s fave brews for Father’s Day 2025. Best of all, and in true Dad fashion, a lot of them are My Dan’s specials. And we all know Dad loves a good deal.

Guinness is a winning beer to gift for Father's Day

1. For the down-to-earth Dads

Rich, smooth and full of that signature Irish soul, enter Guinness. For the Dad who calls a spade a spade, appreciates a good head on a pint, and probably owns at least one Cranberries vinyl. This classic never goes out of style (see Gen Z’s obsession), and Dad – or should we say Mr “Never-Splitting-the-G-Why-Would-I-Do-That” – will absolutely froth a six-pack of Guinness. And to be honest, we’re jealous. Full of sweet roasty, chocolatey notes, deep maltiness and easy bitterness, Guinness lives up to the hype.

2. For the DIY Dads

Hoppy, refreshing and very “I built this (uninvited and unasked for) coffee table with my own two hands”. If Dad’s into craft beers and, let’s call it, adult-craft (AKA DIY), a six-pack of 4 Pines New World Pale Ale is a safe bet. Think nice hoppyness, followed with a touch of wheat for a very soft hazy quality, this beer’s new hops bring a good dose of green melon, passionfruit and citrus, backed by a subtle grassy bitterness. A perfect craft (beer) for a crafty Dad.

3. For the easygoing Dads

For the Dad who thinks start times are a suggestion, and paying for parking is a moral failing, comes the laidback and easy-going case of Philter XPA. This brew is full-flavoured with just the right kick of fruit and attitude – kind of like Dad when he’s in his element (read: in thongs, holding tongs, beer in hand). Unpretentious but never boring, it’s all the best bits of him – relaxed, reliable, a little (a lot) unexpected – in beer form.

4. For the “ask-Dad” Dads

This is for the old-school Dad who taught you to mow the lawn properly – edges first, then straight lines only, for goodness’ sake. The same Dad who still calls the news “the telly” and reckons Coopers is “as good as it gets”. And honestly? He’s not wrong. (Also: always do the edges first.) Coopers Sparkling Ale is a proper classic – an undeniably delicious, slightly nostalgic brew that proves there is no school like the old-school. It’s made the traditional way, top fermentation, natural bottle conditioning and zero shortcuts, which gives it that signature cloudy pour and a fruity, floral aroma that hits just right. It’s malty, full-flavoured and finished with a clean, balanced bitterness.

5. For the suddenly-sophisticated Dads

Some memories just stick. Like your first oyster. Your first Martini. Or that unforgettable moment when Dad realised he actually liked beer that wasn’t just Toohey’s New. Enter: a six-pack of Monsuta Okinawa Premium Draft – something a little different for a Dad who has broadened his beer horizons. The one who casually dropped “umami” into conversation once and has been riding that wave ever since. Monsuta is light, crisp and brewed with the kind of Japanese precision he low-key loves (and high-key talks about at dinner). This is a solid step-up for a Dad who’s not afraid to evolve – just don’t ask him to upgrade his phone (“what’s wrong with my 2011 iPhone?”).

6. For the “Dad, please, not the lycra!” Dads

Every friend group has that one Dad into surfing, mountaineering, trekking, the Tour de France or full-on lycra. It wasn’t ours, but apparently they’re out there. These Dads count macros and micros, but still want to crack open a beer on a Saturday arvo. If you know this Dad, or even have one (unicorn!) Burleigh Brewing Co. Big Head No Carb Beer tastes like the real deal, but won’t wreck his morning workout. No carbs, no worries mate.

7. For the Raybans-and-flannel Dads

This one’s for the ‘still thinks they’re cool’ Dad. The one who somehow taught you the terrifying and unnecessary “hill stop” without screaming too much, and still rocks a skinny jean like he invented Eskimo Joe. He’s the guy who knows that sometimes less is more, and always shows up with quiet confidence. Asahi Super Dry is the “cool” Dad of beers. Clean, crisp and refreshing, it comes in a solid half-litre can – because Dad doesn’t do things by halves (think of the deal!). Whether it’s a lazy Sunday or a backyard catch-up, this beer is as sharp and reliable as he is.
