Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson with his Teremana Tequila, now available in Australia at Dan Murphy's

It’s tequila – with his own Teremana range now finally available in Australia.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a man who, at all times, is doing the most. He was the world’s highest-paid actor from 2019 to 2022, is Disney’s darling (Moana sequel incoming), has returned to wrestling – the profession where he first found fame (now branding himself as The Final Boss) – is behind skincare line PAPATUI, owns a football league, has collabs galore… and now, his Teremana Tequila has landed in Australia, and it’s no joke.

We know what you’re thinking, celebrity tequila brands are a dime a dozen. George Clooney just sold Casamigos (for $1 billon, no less), Kendall Jenner has 818, LeBron James has Lobos 1707, Michael Jordan has Cincoro, Mark Wahlberg has Flecha Azul and Kathy Hilton (as she’ll tell you repeatedly) has Casa Del Sol. No shade to the line-up, but The Rock’s Teremana Tequila is the fastest-growing tequila brand – ever. It launched in early 2020, and in mid-2023, it reported selling one million cases in annual sales – a total of some nine million litres of liquid. This makes it, without a doubt, the most electrifying tequila of all time. And, finally, Aussies can now get their hands on it, too.

Why has Teremana outsized competitors and expectations? It’s more than just its outsized founder. This is from a small-batch distillery in a Mexican town in the peaks of the Jalisco Highland mountains that uses traditional methods and modern sustainability practices to create their tequila. Think handmade copper-pot distilling, small brick ovens for roasting the agave, and 100% of the agave waste turned into fertiliser.

So, if you’re wondering if this is real, authentic tequila, the answer is most certainly yes. One of the brand lines is, “Teremana is about people”, which, for those who know, echoes sentiments of The Rock’s signature wrestling move: The People’s Elbow. And while aesthetically there are no connections between WWE and Teremana, there are easter eggs. They also have a recipe for “The People’s Margarita”.

As a tequila, this is smooth with a load of brick-oven cooked agave coming through, but there are (as is expected) differences between the blanco, reposado and añejo. The Teremana Blanco is sharp, with big pepper and citrus flavours, the Reposado has a much more rounded and creamier flavour with notes of vanilla, and the Añejo is rich and warm with oaky notes present from the whiskey-barrel ageing. It’s good stuff.

It’s not just us who are pleasantly surprised, either. Teremana has been lauded by critics all over the joint, picking up major gold medals at respected awards such as the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, USA Spirits Ratings, and The Tequila & Mezcal Masters.

Now available in Australia, it’s your turn to see what the fuss is all about. This celebrity tequila might just end up eclipsing its star founder.
