Una cerveza, por favor! These are light, crisp and just made for the sunshine.
If you think of Mexican beers and can only picture Corona, it’s time for a stroll around the beer section because there’s so much more to explore. It’s safe to say this light beer style hasn’t always been the north star for other breweries, but that was then. Now? All sorts of other producers (yep, crafts included) are muscling in on this most approachable and, in our opinion, most holiday-ready beer. And we reckon it’s about time.
With beer made in so many different styles, some can be quite polarising (we’re looking at you, Imperial IPA), but the best thing about Mexican-style beers is they’re for everyone. Well, your hops-loving mate might be a little hesitant, but hand them one of the bad boys below – ideally paired with good friends, salty snacks and sunshine – and we think they’ll see the light. Even that friend who doesn’t usually drink beer is likely to find it goes down a treat.
So, what actually is a Mexican beer? The ones we know and love, like Corona, are brewed with maize, as opposed to other grains like barley or wheat. By using corn, brewers get a beer with less bitterness, a lighter body, refreshing flavours and that trademark golden colour. Want in? We’ve selected six standouts, but be sure to keep an eye out for others – highlights like the Kaiju! Cerveza Crisp Lager are only available in Victoria, so it’s worth taking your time on that stroll around the beer aisles.
