A bottle of amaro alongside some plates and glasses

Because nothing says ‘dinner’s not over yet’ like cracking open a digestif.

Let’s talk digestives. Or digestifs, if you will. No, we’re not talking about those sad British teeth-cloggers (AKA Digestive biscuits) – we’re talking about the yin to the aperitif’s yang, the marker of a meal well-enjoyed, and a not-so-subtle hint that the conversation isn’t over just yet: the digestif.

We’ve already dropped a comprehensive 101 on this topic, but in short, a digestif is a heavier-flavoured, often herbal liqueur, spirit or sweet wine that’s said to settle your stomach after a hearty meal. Amari, fortified wines, sweet wines and deeper and darker spirits like Scotch all sit in the digestif category. Think of apéritifs and digestifs as the bookends of a meal: the aperitif primes your stomach, and the digestif calms it down. And while they’re supposed to be perfect counterparts – kinda like Simon and Garfunkel – they’ve ended up being more unequal than, well, Simon and Garfunkel (IYKYK). These days, younger crowds are all about the aperitif and the busy aperitivo hours, leaving the digestif for bartenders and those in the know.

And look, we get it. Digestifs can have a ‘grandpa and his mates playing chess’ vibe, but we’re here to tell you that digestifs don’t have to be dusty ’80s cream sherries. They can be tequila, whiskey and other fun spirits. And let’s be real – nothing screams “I’ve got this” more than ordering an amaro or a Scotch after dinner. Peak cool, right?

So, now that we’ve convinced you, what should you be buying? We’ve rounded up a few of our fave digestifs that make great gift and bar cart staples.

1. De Luze VS Cognac

Honestly, it’s time for Cognac to make its grand comeback. A grape spirit that's widely known but rarely ordered, Cognac is a complex, not-too-sweet brandy made exclusively in – yep, you guessed it – Cognac, France (very Champagne of it, right?). Now, while the big names like Rémy Martin and Hennessy often get a shout-out in Drake lyrics, they’re not the be-all and end-all of the Cognac world. There’s a whole slew of fantastic brands and houses to explore, and De Luze is definitely one of them. With beautiful floral and citrus notes, a touch of orange zest and a delicate hint of oak on the nose, it’s smooth and velvety on the palate with a finish that’s long, fruity, and oh-so-satisfying. And here’s the kicker: it’s perfect for cocktails, which also happen to be killer digestifs. Try mixing up a Sidecar, Vieux Carré, or Brandy Alexander next time you’re in the mood for a post-meal sip. Or, if you’re feeling fancy, just enjoy De Luze neat in a rocks glass or over ice.

2. Lark Classic Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky

Looking for a complex whisky to wrap up the night? Look no further than that gem of a distillery that hails from that island below the mainland – Tassie. Yep, we’re talking about the trendsetter, rule-breaker and rule-setter all in one: Lark. The name says it all; an Aussie classic and well worth a spot on your shelf. Double distilled in copper pot stills and carefully aged in selected small casks, this beauty has notes of sweet vanilla, orange peel, butterscotch, cloves, nutmeg and grapefruit. Perfect as a dram, on the rocks, or if you’re feeling adventurous, try it in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Rob Roy for another cracking cocktail digestif. Talk about versatility.

3. Amaro Montenegro Italiano

Hello, beautiful. This here is the GOAT– the perfect real-deal digestif. This is the brown liqueur you see in those tiny little glasses on tabletops across Italy. And that usually means a good pasta has been had. Sure, Amaro Montenegro can be a particular, often polarising, taste (usually roots, spices, herbs, citrus and even veggies in a base alcohol) and can require some getting used to. But once you’re attuned to that bittersweet amaro flavour, it’s 100000% worth it. We’d describe Amaro Montenegro as one of the more approachable styles, too. Think of it this way: you weren’t born loving oysters, olives or coffee. It takes time, it takes a will and, for sure, it takes a way – or however that saying goes. Drink it over ice, or by itself, and trust us, you will never finish a meal without it.

4. Pantalones Tequila Organico Añejo

Tequila for, or with, dessert? Absolutely yes! Tequila is a versatile spirit. It can, and does, go with everything. Usually associated with cheap shots, frozen Margies and charged up hen’s nights, tequila can actually be a super-sophisticated sipper. We’ve rattled on about it already, but if you’ve finished a meal and don’t feel like something overly sweet, carby or wine-based, the golden, richer variety of tequila, añejo, especially Pantalones Tequila Organico Añejo, is the answer. This is 100% organic agave añejo tequila, and rests for 15 months in American oak whisky barrels, developing rich notes of vanilla, butterscotch and brown sugar with a nice velvety finish. Sip this stunner neat and let it sing.

5. Barbadillo La Cilla Pedro Ximenez

You know we’re big fans of sherry here, and this one’s a perfect example of the Pedro Ximenez style: Barbadillo La Cilla Pedro Ximenez. A sherry legend since 1821, this producer continues to churn out some of the best drops from the iconic Jerez Triangle in Spain, all at a solid price. Made with sun-dried grapes, this little beauty hits you upfront with a luscious, raisin flavour. The palate is rich and velvety, with sultana and caramel notes that just hit right. And don’t worry, it’s beautifully balanced – sweet, but never so sweet that it’s over the top. Serve it on the rocks, or if you’re feeling fancy, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Delish!
