Why you goUp for a nifty side of escapism with that pour of the palest pink Provençal rosé? You’ve come to the right place. South City Wine Bar is catnip for Europhiles. With its jaunty striped green and cream awning and a nostalgic fit-out that would feel right at home in France, it’s designed to feed our fantasies without requiring us to invest in international flights. Sure, it sits in a big, newly built property development in Woolloongabba rather than harbourside at Cannes, but it feels anything but paint-by-numbers. This is another venue from The Talisman Group, the busy outfit behind neighbouring Peruvian-Cantonese bar and restaurant Casa Chow, nearby Sasso Italiano and Palm Springs-inspired gin bar Purple Palm.
Why you stay

South City Wine Bar conjures the flavours of southern Europe without straying far from the Brisbane CBD. Much of the Mediterranean is at your fingertips and the Gallic-leaning soundtrack certainly sets the mood (check out its playlist on Spotify). You can make like you’re in the south of France, sit alongside a cute olive tree and call for snails in garlic butter, steak frites and a glass of Rhône Valley grenache-shiraz-mourvèdre (GSM). Or you can just as easily sit by the same tree and scratch an itch for Italy by ordering a Venetian rosé, creamy truffled burrata cheese, gnocchi dumplings and San Daniele prosciutto ham. Or perhaps you’d prefer a sliver of Spain with a tapa-style snack of baby squid teamed with a bracing glass of albariño.

The dark custom-built timber shelves filling one wall are stacked with bottles plucked from across Europe, Lebanon, the US and across Australia, so you can mix and match wines (and, to a lesser extent, cuisines) to suit your mood. South City Wine Bar’s stylish décor is fittingly timeless, with an assortment of al fresco tables and chairs, booths, and a handsome Provençal-style communal table that’s great for groups. It’s a venue designed for anything from casual post-shopping drop-ins to date-night dinners and grown-up family get-togethers.

What drink to orderThe glorious globetrotting wine list is the go-to here. The detail-driven French-accented cocktail collection is also worth a scan. The Southcity, for instance, is made with 78 Degrees Better Gin and a splash of Cassis-style tart redcurrant liqueur by Victorian maker Marionette. It’s also worth trawling the entire wine list before ordering. More than two dozen by-the-glass choices are threaded throughout. And if you’re after something biodynamic or organic, ask the enthusiastic staff – there’s plenty available, but it’s not necessarily flagged. It’s an eclectic collection. From South Australia, you might find Barossa winemaker Sven Joschke’s La Adeline Rosé, or Unico Zelo’s much-loved Esoterico, a low-intervention orange wine from the Riverland. Venturing further afield, there could be a Sardinian vermentino by the glass from the “aromatic and textural” bracket, a zesty petit Chablis from France’s Domaine Passy Le Clou in the “chardonnay, the queen of grapes” section, or a savoury Bordeaux from Maison Bouey among “cabernet and friends”.  There’s an even better choice by the bottle – bring comrades so you can dive into the likes of Château Musar’s Jeune Red, an uncommon drop from Lebanon. The list is as carefully put-together as the Euro-chic fit-out.
What to pair it withYou can make a night of it, or pop in for a glass or two and a round or three of snacks. If you’re lingering a while, the market fish could be sweet-fleshed flounder cooked in a sauce of butter, lemon and parsley, zinged up with the Middle East’s Aleppo pepper, pine nuts and sultanas. The old-school classic steak frites sees a hefty pat of herb butter on a 300gm sirloin, arriving sliced for sharing, with fries heaped alongside and a side of dressed broad-leaf rocket. Among the snacks, crumbed pork croquettes are brightened with smoked-tomato relish, while fingers of flavour-packed fried bread are topped with piped ricotta and warm marinated artichoke. You could easily freewheel here with selections of cheeses, cured meats and tins from a separate section – a grab-bag of treats that include savoury Spanish Ibérico ham and colourful tins of anchovies, and Italian sardines.

Why we love itSouth City Wine Bar is a surprise package. You instantly think you have its measure – it looks for all the world like an Instagram recreation of a French wine bar – but the more you dig, the more global gold you find.
Make it fancyMost bottles of wine here weigh in under the $100 mark, but you’ll find some heavy-hitting reds sprinkled throughout the list, if you’re in the mood to splurge. The Andrea Oberto Barolo from Italy’s Piedmont will appeal to those who like blockbuster reds. Or if you have a spare $2,400 to burn, you could snap up the Opus One Cabernet from Napa Valley.
Who to takeThe brass lamps on each table cast a flattering glow, helping to make this a good spot for an early date. The music is quieter than at most Talisman venues and the atmosphere is as chilled as the low-fi reds, so it’s a safe destination for D&Ms or catch-ups with friends.
