Strong red purple. Char grilled meat, black cherry/blackberry/blackcurrant, white flowers and pepper with a touch of vanilla and licorice – distinctly like a Northern Rhone wine. On the palate it’s fresh and medium to full bodied with additional flavour grilled meat and spice. It coats the mouth with the fine ripe tannins in a most seductive manner. Ripe but not sweet. Power without aggression. Finishes long with a delicious roast meat and black fruit finish. I don’t think I’ve tasted a better young Australian Shiraz.

The 2002 Giaconda shiraz looks increasingly like a brilliant shiraz, and as a young wine this looks even better. If you have a Giaconda way of thinking, and drinking, then you are in for a treat here. The flavours are along the expected lines – graphite, black cherries, cedar and undergrowth, all of it clean but all of it interesting. There’s a smoky barrel-ferment character too, and quite a deal of cedary oak, but the thing that makes me rave is the tannin, which has a sense of exclusivity to it: this is a special, complex, compelling wine.
