Penfolds makes Adelaide Hills pinot noir that tastes, well, as much of Penfolds as it does of Adelaide Hills pinot noir. No doubt the structure and grip of nine months in 68% new French oak barriques has a lot to do with this. 2014 is not a season for such a high dose of new oak, with a significant rain event in mid-February slowing harvest and making for a more subtle, sour and savoury style. 15% inclusion of whole bunches in the ferment accentuates dried herb notes, over a core of sour berry fruits, morello cherries and beetroot. A tart finish accentuates the astringent structure of oak tannins.

Medium deep colour. Fresh strawberry, redcurrant aromas with herb garden notes. Delicious fruity, strawberry redcurrant flavours, supple lacy textures and underlying savoury, vanilla oak. Finishes chalky and long. A very attractive and pleasing wine.
