Discover the different styles of shiraz
Shiraz is experiencing an evolution in Australia. We still love the intense flavour bombs that made Australian reds famous in the 1990s, but it’s thrilling to watch the emergence of more elegant expressions that reflect regional influence and our changing palates. Try a few from each style and see if you can put a finger on the characters you most enjoy.
Tasting Guide
Elegant and Spicy Shiraz
Silkiness and balance is key for these wines, which are great with food and will age well in the medium term. Look for a variety of red fruit aromas offset by savoury notes such as earth, white pepper and leather. Oak has a savoury influence, providing wood spice, hazelnut and toast elements.
Tasting Guide
Soft and Fruity Shiraz
These round, mouth-filling and juicy wines are designed for drinking right now. Look for big fruit characters such as berries and plums with touches of black pepper. Oak influence should be soft and integrated, providing sweet baker’s spice and plush tannins.
Tasting Guide
Rich and Powerful Shiraz
Look for black fruit flavours through to intense Christmas cake characters. There may be some elements like dark chocolate and tobacco, layered with oak flavours of cedar, vanilla or coconut. Texture will range from rich and mouth filling to firm and grippy.
