Some of the best sugar-free premix cans

You don’t need a sugar hit with flavours this good.

Let’s make this short and sweet: sugar isn’t the only reason to enjoy a drink, especially when it comes to premixes. There are plenty of other unique, punchy and (sugar-free) sweet flavours to choose from with RTDs. It’s a lot like if you mixed a drink yourself – the flavour combinations are nearly infinite, and sugar is definitely not essential. But don’t take our word for it – here are eight sugar-free premixes that prove our point.

1. Hard Rated Zero Sugar Lemon Lime

We probably don’t need to introduce you to Hard Rated, but here’s the recap anyway. These zesty, fruity, pub-squash-like drinks pack in all the sweet, fruity flavours we love. The Zero Sugar versions – like this citrusy Lemon Lime combo – are every bit a match for the original flavours. Serve this in a tall glass with plenty of ice and a slice of lime whenever the weather is nice enough to sit outside.

2. Vodka Cruiser Zero Sugar Mixed 10 Pack

Vodka Cruisers are classics for a reason: they’re bright, sweet and packed with electric-coloured fruit flavours like Mango Raspberry and Strawberry Watermelon. This mixed 10-pack brings all your favourites together (in Zero Sugar form, of course) for what is clearly an esky-ready party pack. Put them on ice, wheel out the chips and dip (we love anything creamy and cheesy, personally) and settle in.

3. Bundaberg Campfire Bourbon Barrel Finished Rum & Zero Sugar Cola

The name is a mouthful, but when a sugar-free premix is this unique and delicious, we’re not complaining. This is really all about the Bundaberg Rum, which sees aged rums blended and finished in bourbon whiskey barrels, bringing a woody richness and plenty of those sweet butterscotch and vanilla flavours that bourbon casks deliver. The Zero Sugar cola adds a little bubbly freshness, but this is really all about that special rum. Toast a few marshmallows, campfire style, and see what all the fuss is about.

4. 23rd Street Distillery Violet Gin & Tonic

Gin and Tonic doesn’t get much more interesting than this eye-catcher from 23rd Street Distillery. The gin is packed with Aussie native botanicals like finger lime, lemon myrtle and wattle seed, but the real trick is the butterfly pea, which lends the gin its vibrant violet hue. It’s citrusy, peppery and complex, offset by a dry, sugar-free tonic. Serve this one over ice with your favourite garnish (something herbal, like rosemary, would be fun) with grilled seafood.

5. Absolut Vodka Mixed With Sprite Zero Sugar

What can we say about Absolut and Sprite Zero Sugar? It’s two stone-cold classics in one: silky smooth Absolut Vodka and sweet, crisp, lightly zesty Sprite – but without the sugar. This seems like the ideal filler for the chilly bin on camping trips, at music festivals or anytime the backyard party is kicking off and mixing your own drinks seems a bridge too far.

6. Canadian Club Whisky & Zero Sugar Dry

Canadian Club nailed it when they started mixing their light, easy-going Canadian whisky with dry ginger ale. There’s a subtle warmth from the ginger, a toasty caramel flavour from the Canadian Club, and – in this case, at least – a pleasant sweetness but no sugar. That ginger spice means that CC and Dry could be a hit food pairing alongside dishes like teriyaki chicken or cold sesame noodles.

7. Smirnoff Crush Zero Sugar Mango Peach

Expect big flavours in a big can. The idea behind Smirnoff’s Crush is that mixing sugar-free, natural fruit flavours (juicy peach and mango in this case) with vodka is a winner. Smirnoff is also bucking the trend for smaller servings, instead upsizing to a 440mL can that is begging to be matched with your pals, a fruit salad and plenty of sunshine. Now we just need to find a stubby holder big enough.

8. Ampersand Pink Gin Soda

Ampersand ticks a lot of boxes with this delicious drink that is perfect to grab and go. You’re getting no sugar (of course), along with no carbs and no gluten, but you still get a truckload of fresh flavour. This is a simple blend of gin and soda, punched up with a fruity wildberry blend that brings it all together. You could easily upgrade it by pouring it into an ice-filled glass and adding a few frozen berries of your choosing.
