This trend for the sober-curious is all over TikTok. Here’s everything you need to know about ‘going damp’ – and no, it doesn’t involve wearing clothes that need more time in the dryer.

You’ve probably heard of Dry July or Sober October, but what about ‘going damp’? It’s a term that recently went viral on TikTok; in fact, #damplifestyle has more than 27 million views and counting. Instead of cutting out alcohol completely or changing your habits for just one month, this trend is about making a moderate lifestyle change for the long term. It’s growing traction online, especially among the younger generation who approach it candidly on socials. Want to know more? Here’s the lowdown on going damp.
What does going damp mean?

Damp drinking, going damp or living a damp lifestyle: whichever way you incorporate the word ‘damp’ into the equation, it’s really about approaching your drinking habits in a more mindful way and taking a moment to reconsider your relationship with alcohol. That could look like drinking less, drinking differently or only having a drink on a special occasion, among other things. There are no hard-and-fast rules around living a damp lifestyle – after all, it’s a social trend and, as we know, they come and go. Many people have been doing exactly this for yonks, but now we have a name for it, and it’s helping to provide people with more options for how they interact with alcohol, as well as lower the stigma for those who choose to abstain.

One way of thinking about living a damp lifestyle is it can demonstrate that drinking doesn’t have to be black and white. It’s a way to understand that you might not need to go all out at a club on the weekend, but you also don’t have to sit at home with a cuppa on the couch (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Proponents of going damp see it as all about balance and taking a considered approach to your relationship with drinking.

Why damp? ‘Going dry’ is a term you’ve probably heard – it’s the act of cutting out alcohol altogether. ‘Going damp’ is a play on this terminology; it means you still drink alcohol, but you may drink less or approach it with a different mindset. You might also hear the term ‘sober curious’ when referring to going damp, suggesting that those who are thinking of cutting out alcohol completely might look at living a damp lifestyle first to experience the shift in their drinking habits before deciding if they abstain altogether.
Ways to live a damp lifestyleReady to feel damper than after a walk home in the rain? Not quite the vibe here, but you know what we mean. If you do want to make small long-term changes to your drinking lifestyle then try things like learning more about ABVs and standard drinks, opting out of a round at the bar, starting or finishing your night with a mocktail, swapping every second or third drink of alcohol for a glass of water or zero% option, or being more selective about when you drink (i.e. only on certain occasions instead of every weekend or most weeknights). You might also switch to lower ABV options at home or at the bar. There are tonnes of helpful tips on TikTok from people living the damp lifestyle.
The choice is yours (and it's a personal one)Like with anything, the way you approach your lifestyle – ‘going damp’ being one of them – is completely up to you, and drinking responsibly means different things to different people. You might already be doing it, you might scroll through the many TikTok videos after you finish this story to learn even more about it, it might be the nudge you need to explore sobriety, or you may feel quite content with your lifestyle and approach to drinking as it is. It’s a personal preference and you should do whatever is right for you.
