Say goodbye to the sweet whites of yesteryear and say hello to Clare’s racy, bone-dry rieslings.

Riesling. Some people love it, some people love to hate it, and some people don’t really know what to expect. But one thing is for sure – it’s a grape with a reputation.

To provide some context, riesling was hugely popular in the ’70s and ’80s for its inexpensive, lusciously sweet wines – yeah, you know the ones. But by the ’90s, this style had fallen out of favour as public tastes shifted towards crisper, drier and more diverse offerings. While the days of such sugary sweet whites are largely behind us, many are still hesitant about picking a bottle of riesling off the shelf for fear it will prove a cavity-inducing experience. Well, we’re here to reassure you that riesling has undergone a dramatic transformation in Australia, with the Clare Valley leading the charge.

With zesty fruit, nose-tingling perfume and pure, racy acidity that will set your mouth watering, it’s hard not to love a Clare Valley riesling. And we’re not the only ones taken with this regional style; with an enviable reputation that reaches around the globe, the Clare Valley has become virtually synonymous with Australian riesling, producing several distinctive expressions from the region’s iconic subregions: Watervale, Polish Hill River, Auburn and Sevenhill. Although technically quite a warm region, Clare’s magical combination of high altitudes, afternoon breezes and cool nights produces rieslings that are bright and refreshing. Add clean, fruit-focused winemaking and limited ageing in stainless steel, and you’ve got racy wines that almost always punch above their weight in the value department.

Capable of ageing for years, even decades, and fantastically food friendly to boot, it’s easy to see why everyone’s raving about these wines. So if you’re ready to jump on the riesling train, destination Clare Valley, then check out these five bottles that truly capture this unique regional style. All aboard!

1. Pikes Traditionale Riesling

Pikes is one of Clare Valley's most recognisable wineries, thanks in large part to its pike-fish logo. The Pikes family has been making wine in Clare Valley since 1985, though their brewing history dates back a whole century earlier to 1885 (you can taste both their wine and beer at the family-owned estate in Polish Hill). At the heart of their range is the Traditionale Riesling, a bright expressive wine featuring the Clare’s hallmark floral perfume, limey citrus and tangy minerality. With juicy orchard fruit, crisp acidity and wonderful length through the palate, this wine is pure pleasure to drink. And a great introduction to the region’s signature grape.

2. Skillogalee CV Riesling

With over 50 years of experience producing award-winning, estate-grown wines, the team at Skillogalee know a thing or two about riesling. Made with an emphasis on freshness and elegance, the Skillogalee Clare Valley Riesling is a classic style produced from a blend of fruit from vineyards across their estate and perfectly captures the region’s distinctive terroir. A lively, full-flavoured drop with hallmark citrus, white blossom notes and mouth watering acidity, this wine is as delicious as it is drinkable. Very.

3. Jim Barry’s Garden Riesling

There are some names that truly resonate throughout the Australian wine industry and Jim Barry is one of them. As the Clare Valley’s first qualified winemaker, Jim was a driving force in establishing the region’s reputation for world class wines, especially riesling. Today this winemaking tradition is carried on by the family affair, with three generations of Barrys currently involved in the winery and cellar door. With such a phenomenal range, it can be hard to pick a favourite – but one we simply can’t go past is the Garden Riesling, a zesty little number bursting with fresh cut citrus, yellow peach and white florals. The palate is alive with zippy acidity , along with an abundance of citrus, white peach, honeydew melons and gooseberries. Don’t forget its tingly, fresh lime finish.

4. Claymore Walk this Way Riesling

The Claymore crew have established a reputation for playful, high-quality wines, which comes as no surprise given the winery was born out of a love for good wine and music. So, if you’re after a thirst-quenching drop with zesty fruit and good vibes, then Claymore’s Walk this Way Riesling is the wine for you. This label, true to its musical moniker, is the result of a collaboration with Clarymore’s local Clare Valley grower partners to showcase the region’s trademark variety at its best. This regional blend comprises fruit from their estate-managed Watervale vineyards as well as select parcels from Auburn and Sevenhill. The result is a bright, juicy wine with zinging acidity that will have you reaching for a second glass.

Established by industry legend Tim Knappstein in 1976, Knappstein has earned a reputation as a regional icon. And although Tim is no longer involved, the quality of wine has remained consistently excellent. With fruit sourced from several of their estate-owned vineyards, the Hand-Picked Riesling is a regional blend that showcases the incredible spectrum of flavours this grape is capable of producing. A classical wine, with concentrated notes of lime, spice and white blossoms on the nose, as well as a generously flavoured palate brimming with lively acidity and a lick of saline minerality.
