A beer and a glass of wine with waters next to them

And why we should all be doing it.

We're all familiar with zebras, right? The horse-like animals distinguished by their black and white stripes – each pattern so unique that it's akin to a human's fingerprints? Right. So, what's all this talk about zebra stripes and alcohol? Well, it hasn't got much to do with the majestic zebra at all.

Zebra striping is a new(ish) term – likely cropping up on your FYP – but it's not a new concept. Put simply, zebra striping is a 1:1 ratio of alternating alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. It's all about responsible consumption. By practicing zebra striping, you reduce your alcohol intake.

How to practice zebra striping

Now, for how to actually do it. It's simple. Say you order a Manhattan as your first drink, that is your black stripe. The next round would be a non-alc option like a sparkling water (remember to stay hydrated out there), you could opt to sub in a mocktail like our Non-Alcoholic Watermelon Mojito, or an ice cold CZ (that's one for our corporate girlies). Your non-alc option is your white stripe.

In true zebra-striping fashion, your third drink would be alcohol-based (another black stripe). Then back to the waters (white stripe). You get it. It's the age-old advice to drink plenty of water on a night out, and by using the one-for-one rule, it's that much easier to keep track of your intake

Where has the zebra striping movement come from? You've likely seen it on TikTok and, while its origin is kind of unknown, it's an increasingly popular practice in Britain and the States. It’s like we said, zebra striping is not a new idea, it’s just been given a catchy name – but we love a rebrand.
Non-alcoholic drinks and zebra stripingThere was a time (not thaaat long ago) when we weren’t exactly spoiled for choice on the non-alc front. Not only is the offering on the shelf as strong as ever (making creating non-alc drinks at home a breeze), but bars are amping up their offerings, too. It’s no longer a choice between the Shirley Temple or the Virgin Mary (Bloody Mary sans vodka), there are pages dedicated to those omitting the alcohol. If you’re zebra striping this week, kick off with a Cosmo, and then switch to a Zero%* Cosmopolitan.
Who is zebra striping?According to CNN, 61% of people across the US and UK will moderate their alcohol intake by zebra striping for the remainder of 2025. Not only does zebra striping help moderate consumption, while still you still get to be the social butterfly that you are, but it's also great for the hip pocket (double win).
