Our expert Wine Merchant, Ben, talks us through the latest wine from our Winemakers Release range.

Just like that, the Winemakers Release has returned for its second instalment. And if you happened to snag a bottle of the first release – a Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon – you'll know that this shiraz is one to look out for, especially if you're a fan of all things Barossa

To celebrate, we spoke with Ben, a Dan Murphy's Wine Merchant, about the Winemakers Release range and the new shiraz. He's based in South Australia, so he's all too familiar with Barossa shiraz and the winemaker Richard Quodling. Here's what he had to say.

What is the Winemakers Release range?"These wines are made from special parcels of fruit that we've come across in our vineyards," says Ben. "Fruit that isn't reserved for a certain wine, but is far too special to simply blend with other grapes. We're lucky to have access to some amazing winemakers within the Dan's family, so this is a real opportunity for them, and everything is focused on varietal and value. The wine has to deliver exactly what it says on the label, whether it's a Barossa shiraz or Coonawarra cabernet, and leave the customer wondering how we manage to make such a great wine at this price. That's what we're going for."
What does the Winemakers Release 2018 Barossa Shiraz taste like?Blackberry and plum, some subtle oak, and aromas of spice and dark berries – this full-bodied wine has all the markings of a classic Barossa shiraz. "It's a cracker," says Ben, "made in that lovely, modern style of Barossa shiraz, rather than an absolute monster with overripe fruit. It's all about those jammy flavours and rich fruits that people love in a Barossa shiraz, so it'll tick all the boxes without being over the top. It's nicely balanced and fantastic if you feel like a really nice wine but don't want to crack something really special."
Who made the wine?"This release was made by Richard Quodling, or Quads, as he's known," says Ben. "He knows the region back to front and is an amazing winemaker, and you don't usually get amazing winemakers crafting a $14 shiraz." That said, even a compliment like 'amazing winemaker' is selling Quodling short. In 2020, he was awarded the trophy for Best Barossa Red Wine at the Barossa Wine Show, so it's safe to say he knows his way around a shiraz grape.
When would you drink this wine? And what would make a great food pairing?

"I'd splash this into a decanter before dinner and wouldn't tell people what it is," says Ben. "It'll open up beautifully and everyone will be shocked when you tell them how much you've paid for it. It's definitely got the quality there."

When it comes to food, there are always classic shiraz pairing options like pizza or barbecue. But for Ben, this wine goes really well with vegetarian food. "Something like a vegetarian pasta with tomato sauce or anything with eggplant," he says. "I've drunk it with a Sicilian capanata and it was pretty amazing. Even a more robust, Japanese-style dish like agedashi tofu would be a winner because the umami flavour works really, really with Barossa shiraz, as there are enough savoury notes going on."
