From a twist on a classic Espresso Martini (with salted caramel and popcorn no less!) to an aperitif-hour Spritz that tastes like the real thing.

Bec Judd is a busy woman: she’s a model, TV presenter, speech pathologist and owner of activewear brand Jaggad, which turns 10 this year. When she’s not in business meetings, doing the school run or jumping in front of the camera, you’ll find Bec out and about in her hometown of Melbourne enjoying a bite to eat and the perfect beverage to match – either a classic Margarita or a non-alcoholic alternative. “I love that there’s a zero%* version of pretty much everything these days. Whether it’s an Espresso Martini, a Margarita or a Negroni, the options are just about endless.”

For Bec, zero% is her go-to when the social calendar is packed. “I like to swap in more non-alcoholic drinks around busy social times like Christmas and holidays, or when I’m busy with the kids. When there’s a lot of social activity going on and I’m jumping from party to party, zero% alternatives are a great option.”

A night out on the town for Bec is all about gathering the ones she loves – “my husband and my girlfriends and their partners” – and heading into the city to find some delicious food and great cocktails to boot. “We love going to Grill Americano in Melbourne’s CBD. Normally we’ll order the steak; the truffle risotto is always a highlight, too. Oh, and the mac ‘n’ cheese!” she adds.

It’s all about having options. A delicious classic cocktail when the night calls for it – or a bang-on non-alcoholic version that tastes just as fabulous. If you’ve never been able to nail the non-alc cocktail yourself, we’ve got recipes for Bec’s three favourites below, each a perfect zero% alternative to a classic.

Putting the final touches on a Zero*% Cosmo

1. Zero% CosmopolitanWhen it comes to a night in entertaining her nearest and dearest, Bec can’t go past this old favourite. “I love how zesty and fun this one is! Just like the classic Cosmo, if I’m having it at home with my girlfriends, I’ll make it in a big batch and serve from a big glass dispenser.” Alongside the classic cranberry juice, our recipe for a Zero% Cosmopolitan uses a non-alcoholic white spirit (like Banks Botanicals Non Alcoholic Spirit) and orange liqueur (Lyre's do a great one). And for the best and freshest drink, keep your glasses in the freezer until you are ready to use them. Just because this is a non-alcoholic Cosmo doesn’t mean you can’t get a little fancy with the garnish. Try cutting a thin orange zest peel and brief

2. Zero% Aperitif SpritzBec says it’s hard to believe this isn’t the OG Aperol Spritz. “The taste is so authentic with the perfect blend of citrus, sweet and bitter,” she says. This recipe and method follows the traditional Spritz proportions of three parts sparkling wine, two parts aperitif and one part soda water. And yes, you can indeed find great non-alc alternatives for all the key ingredients. The Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Italian Spritz is a great Aperol alternative, and Tread Softly makes a Zero Alcohol Prosecco that feels right at home here. Add in some Fever Tree Premium Soda Water and you’re sorted. “I love adding a green olive as part of the garnish for a nice savoury element, but it’s totally optional,” Bec says. “Mint can also be used as a garnish for colour and aroma, but only if the olive isn’t used – those two flavours don’t get along!”
3. Zero% Salted Caramel Espresso Martini“This is such a crowd-pleaser whenever I make it at a dinner party! The caramel notes give me the warm fuzzies – it’s the perfect drink for a winter’s night.” A delicious take on the famous Espresso Martini, this creamy, smooth and delicious drink is everything you love about the original, sans booze, and with the added benefit of caramel and popcorn – what more could you want? Turn to Lyre’s again and their Non-Alcoholic Coffee Originale (a sub for coffee liqueur) and their Spiced Cane Spirit, then whack in some Salted Caramel Syrup to seal the deal. “I love making one of these when I feel like something sweet – it’s more like a dessert than a drink in my books!” So fire up the espresso machine (or pick up some First Press Black Coffee Extract) and prepare to knock the socks off your dinner party guests. You’ll find the full recipe here.
