This year’s top wines include a debut grenache – and it costs less than you might expect.

There are Australian wine icons, and then there’s Penfolds. Even if you’ve never tried one of their wines, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard the name or can recognise that famous red logo. The winery’s been around for almost 180 years (props to Mary Penfold for running the show back in the late 1800s), but it’s possibly best known for Grange, the pinnacle wine that just squeaks in under $1000 – per bottle.

But if you think Penfolds only does the high-end stuff, let us introduce you to their 2023 Collection. Each year, the Penfolds team releases a full range of wines, and all but one costs a lot less than Grange. They still may not be budget drops, but if you’re a Penfolds fan, they’re a whole lot more achievable than the very top tier. Launching on August 3, this new collection is made up of 23 wines, including the ones they now make in France and California. The best bits? There’s a special new grenache debuting in the range that’s already won us over, and My Dan’s members can beat the rush on this year’s collection by pre-ordering ahead of everyone else.

At $59.99, the new Bin 21 Grenache 2022 is an excellent way to get a taste of what Penfolds does best. If you’re into red wines with bright red-fruit flavours, savouriness and spice, this grenache is for you. And with the wider collection spanning everything from riesling (the Bin 51 always over-delivers) and chardonnay (the Yattarna and Reserve Bin A are consistently celebrated as Australian benchmarks) to cabernet shiraz blends (that famed Bin 389 is worth the splurge), there’s a lot to explore.

Here to help, we run through five of the highlight wines in the 2023 Penfolds Collection, including that debut grenache as well as one special chardonnay that’s just scored a perfect 100 points.

1. Penfolds Bin 21 Grenache 2022

We’re pretty excited about this new bright-fruited grenache. Stick your nose in the glass and you’ll get vibrant red fruits – think raspberries, cranberries and pomegranate – along with meaty, savoury and spiced aromas. Take a sip and strawberry notes shine, while good acidity and silky tannins create a soft mouthful of generous fruit. Despite Penfolds first making this wine more than 20 years ago, this is the first time it’s made the cut into the collection, with the Bin 21 marking its debut.

2. Penfolds Grange 2019

The top dog of the Penfolds Collection, this famous red blend was first made in 1951, and despite a rocky start, it’s been made ever since and revered for decades. The 2019 is almost all shiraz (97%) with a splash of cabernet (3%), and the fruit comes from multiple vineyards across four South Australian regions – McLaren Vale, Barossa, Clare Valley and Coonawarra. Some people believe Grange needs years in the bottle before you can truly enjoy it, but this new release is fresh and balanced, with blue and black fruit flavours, and grainy, integrated tannins, which all makes it a great drink for now, too. Coming in at just under a grand, this is no weeknight wine (for most of us, at least), but it’s a truly special bit of history.

3. Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2020

One of the quiet achievers of the Penfolds Collection, St Henri can often stand apart from the bolder, more powerful reds in the range as it tends to be rich and plush as a young new release. For those with the patience to resist cracking it open, the St Henri develops soft, earthy and mocha-like characters over time, and the Penfolds team suggests this one will drink beautifully until at least 2050. Fruit for the 2020 was sourced from vineyard sites across McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley, and this combination has created an umami-filled, spiced shiraz.

4. Penfolds Yattarna 2021

Penfolds may be renowned for red wine, but its whites are serious standouts, as the new vintage of this top chardonnay proves. The Yattarna was initially created with the lofty ambition of setting the standard for just how good Australian chardonnay can be. In order to achieve this, fruit for this wine is sourced from the best cool-climate parcels – this year from Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills. The 2021 blends citrus flavours with nutty notes that all lead to its trademark long finish, meaning you can taste the wine long after you finish your sip.

5. Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2021

Just scraping in under $200, the RWT Shiraz is one of the collection’s more prestigious wines, which defies the acronym it’s carried since it was developed in the 1990s, standing for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’. Unlike many wines in the Penfolds Collection, the fruit for this shiraz comes solely from the Barossa Valley, showcasing some of the best traits of this much-loved region. This 2021 release is a powerful, opulent shiraz, with flavours of coffee and chocolate as well as dark, brooding blue and black fruits, and it finishes with fine, polished tannins.
