A selection of seltzers, which mix spirits with sodas in new ways

Seltzers are making a splash thanks to their ultra-refreshing taste and naturally low calorie count.

Seltzers may have arrived on the Australian scene last year, but they are set to seriously explode this summer. So, what actually is a seltzer? An export of the US, this new can on the block is technically coined ‘hard seltzer’ and either made up of sparkling water mixed with spirit and infused with flavouring, or brewed for naturally occurring fermentation and fizz.

Convenient, ultra-refreshing and delicious, seltzers have even more appeal thanks to their natural low calorie count and generally lower alcohol content, making them perfect for anyone looking to be more mindful with their drink choices, while still consuming something tasty.

They’re a great addition to any summer picnic or backyard barbecue, so roll out your rug, fire up the grill and pop these six new seltzers on ice – you won’t regret it!

1. Tropapalooza Berry and Lime Seltzer

With a name like Tropapalooza, it’s clear this seltzer was made to enjoy during summer shindigs. It boasts the delicious flavour combination of berries and lime so is nice and sweet, with just the right amount of tartness to balance it out. The base formulation is brewed before being mixed with natural flavours, and it’s both vegan-friendly and low carb, with only 32 calories per 100ml. Crack open a can, pour into your favourite fiesta-ready glass and throw in some fresh raspberries and a wedge of lime for the ultimate guilt-free refreshment. All that’s left to do is crank the tunes.

We all dream of island living, but if the heat is unrelenting and there's no way to escape, we may well start to second guess our plans… or at least look around for something worthy of quenching our thirst. With just a hint of berry tartness, Island Fever delivers a clean and crisp seltzer taste. Drink it straight from an ice-cold can for instant relief on those hot Aussie summer days.

3. Rainbird Cranberry Seltzer

Rainbird’s seltzers have already won legions of fans, and their newest flavour combines pure Australian sparkling water and premium spirit with the delicious taste of cranberry. Coming in at 8%, this one is slightly higher in alcohol than most seltzers, so it has a little extra kick to complement the tart cranberry zing. With a name inspired by the birds that sing to herald the rain, Rainbird seltzer is super refreshing and, at only 1% sugar, a fantastic choice for when you want to consume alcohol without the sweet stuff. Given its strength, it's definitely one to savour through a sunny afternoon, preferably while showing your friends just how far your Finska skills have come.

4. Jack Daniels & Blood Orange Seltzer

Inspired by the Old Fashioned cocktail, this unique new seltzer, from an iconic whiskey brand, is sure to be an instant talking point amongst friends. Vibrant blood orange and hints of grapefruit and raspberry are wonderfully complemented by whiskey to create a delicious drink with just the right amount of sweetness. If you’re already a Jack Daniels lover, this one is a no-brainer for summer: it’s lighter and more refreshing than their other premixes, but still has the classic subtle vanilla notes of the Tennessee whiskey that you know and love. And if you previously weren’t a fan of whiskey? Well, we think this might be just the thing to change your mind. It's perfect as a sundowner as the day cools off and the bonfire starts, so who’s starting the singalong?
