The collection is here, complete with a very special new wine to celebrate the winery’s milestone birthday.

As far as Aussie wines go, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more iconic, more legendary, more world-renowned label than Penfolds. This South Australian producer has been setting the bar high for exactly 180 years (happy birthday, Penfolds!), and in our opinion – and most wine folk – is the poster child of Aussie innovation and hard work. So, it’s only fitting to toast Penfolds with… a glass of Penfolds! If you’re feeling fancy and have a grand to spare, you could go for Grange (read more about this famed red wine here). Otherwise, any of the other top releases in this year’s Penfolds Collection will hit the spot perfectly.

If you really want to celebrate their 180th birthday in style, Penfolds, in true hard-yakka fashion, has released a very special wine (and by ‘very special’ we mean jereboam-for-$18K special) – the limited-edition Bin 180 Cabernet Shiraz. Available in 750ml bottles or three-litre jereboams enclosed in a custom-made case, this pinnacle red blend showcases the very best Coonawarra fruit from the 2021 vintage, resulting in a deliciously complex expression of the region. It’s available alongside other knockout Penfolds wines, including the Bin 128 Shiraz 2022, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 and the Yattarna Chardonnay 2022, to name just a few.

It’s safe to say the 2024 Penfolds Collection is made up of exceptional wines – for your cellar, Saturday dinner party, Tuesday steak night, or whenever. So, if you can’t quite justify buying those three litres of liquid gold, we’ve rounded up some other brilliant drops that won’t all break the bank. Without further ado, let us introduce you to five of the bright shiny stars of this year’s releases.

1. Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2023

If you’re looking for a consistent classic, the Bin 311 Chardonnay is for you. Made with high-grade fruit from multiple regions, including Tassie, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills, it’s everything you want from your cool-climate chardy – and more. Reminiscent of a Chablis-style wine, there’s lovely fruit upfront, while beautiful oaky notes from its time spent in French oak bring up the rear. Sometimes called ‘baby Yattarna’, as it’s treated in much the same way, this is a wine that always over-delivers. Cellar it for up to 10 or 12 years, or drink it sooner – you do you. But we suggest serving it with a beautifully roasted chook so it can live up to its full delicious potential.

2. Penfolds Bin 21 Grenache 2023

Named for the 21 years since its debut as the Penfolds Cellar Reserve Grenache, but now in its rightful place within this collection, the Bin 21 is expressive and complex, yet subtle and medium-bodied. Coming through in a growing season that was cooler than average, it demanded a lot of attention from the team (high maintenance!), but it more than delivered. A synergistic mix of McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley fruit, it promises a big future and can be cellared for up to 10 or 12 years. Whatever you do, put it next to some food, especially game meat such as duck. We’re salivating already.

Super approachable now, you can also cellar the Bin 28 for a while.

3. Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2022

Fans of full-bodied shiraz should look no further than this longtime favourite, the Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz. As the oldest wine in the Penfolds Bin family, this is a benchmark wine that embodies Penfolds’ DNA, and it is also downright delish. With big chewy tannins, it has structured yet balanced fruit hemmed in by some superb acid retention – a classy hallmark of its cooler growing conditions. Super approachable now, you can also cellar the Bin 28 for a while – if you can keep your hands off it for up to 25 years, you’ll be very glad you did. Complete the experience with a wagyu steak or spicy salami for a chilli kick.

4. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2022

Can’t afford Grange? We’ve got the next best thing: “Baby Grange”, a more approachable (cost included) alternative to the big boss. This wine has even been matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange, so it’s pretty special. What can we expect from this new 389? Indulgence, a full body, texture, layered complexity and what the team describes as a “balanced completeness.” In short, it’s delicious. It’s drinking beautifully now, but considering it’s the third-most cellared wine in Australia, we suggest letting it sit for some time – it can last for up to 35 years. As for a snack or meal to put next to your Bin 389? Lamb chops all the way.

5. Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2020

And now to that famous flagship, Grange. We know this isn’t in everyone’s budget, but if you’re looking for a sound investment, this new Grange 2020 could be it. Originally super daring and experimental back in 1951 – it was even discredited by the Penfolds board, who demanded its production be stopped (spoiler: it continued) – this wine is now a true superstar. As you can imagine, this full-bodied beauty is quite the drop – think powerful density with balance and structure. Considered the ultimate expression of the Penfolds blending philosophy, this wine should be snapped up – but try not to drink it yet. Cellar this for up to 45 years and let it do its thing, or bring it out when the time feels right. Just make sure you eat it with a big juicy steak.
