Beer and cider don’t have to be boring or bitter if you don’t want them to be.

Here at Dan’s Daily, we’re all about flavour. Specifically, good flavour. Labels, prestige and celebrity endorsements are well and good, but if it doesn’t also taste bloody good then what’s the point? It’s a requirement for drinks for social occasions, drinks to keep the summer vibes rolling through autumn and, most importantly, drinks we’ll gladly buy again.

With that in mind, we’ve lined up a hit list of options that fit the bill. A bunch of flavour-filled bevvies that don't fit into just one category, but wear many hats – beers but flavoured, ciders but lychee – slashies for the slashies (Gen Z and Millennials, we’re looking at you). So, if you like your lines blurred and your flavours robust, read on.

1. Great Northern Brewing Co. Ginger Beer

Cracking open a ginger beer in the great outdoors is a holy experience. Whether it be the wilds of the Aussie bush, the manicured beauty of a park, or the convenience of your backyard, it’s an outdoorsy kind of can. Made from the finest Queensland ginger, this brew from Great Northern Brewing Co. straddles the line of crisp and dry, and it’s the perfect accompaniment for your next outdoor social gathering – barbecue, block party, picnic et al. We recommend drinking it over ice, with a good wedge of lime next to something sticky and spicy so those sweet bubbles can go to work.

2. Riot Spritz Lemon Lychee Cans

When was the last time you had a lychee? Was it sometime in the early noughts in Martini form? Well, friends, we’re pleased to announce it’s back and better than ever. The clever people at Riot Spritz have created this Lemon Lychee can that is bubbly, light and oh-so-sippable. It’s technically cider-based, but whatever it is, it’s a perfect addition to brunch. It sits very pretty next to a prawn cocktail or even as something to have in-hand when playing Scrabble with a few mates. Serve it up in a fancy wine glass with plenty of ice and a slice of lemon.

3. Mountain Goat Hazy Apple Cider

Cider is a chameleon. You can drink it in the heat of a summer’s day, around a campfire during winter or watching a movie with friends. It goes almost too well with dumplings and noodles, and is always underappreciated, but always welcomed. Not everyone will reach for a beer, but everyone will have a crack at a cider, especially Mountain Goat Hazy Apple. A blend of red apples for sweetness and Granny Smith for intrigue, this cider is fruity, refreshing and not too sweet. As we said, invite some friends over, serve it up with some takeaway dumplings, throw on some Netflix, and serve it over ice or straight out of the cold can.

4. Carlton Dry Juicy Mango Flavoured Beer

Beer? Mango? Huh? Stay with us. Remember what we said about flavour? Well, this is it. Don’t let that ‘beer’ or fruit label sway your opinion. This is a delicious drink, full of intriguing flavours that are light, sweet (but not too much) and juicy. If you ask us, this is the perfect partner for a BYO Thai dinner. Grab a table, a couple of spring rolls, and a delicious Thai salad – one with tonnes of green mango and papaya, and crack one of these bad boys. Much like the fruit and meat of a Thai salad, beer and fruit in the Carlton Dry Juicy Mango brew is the unlikely pairing you need to get your gob around.

5. Rider Lite 4% Lager

Sometimes you don’t have to go the whole hog. Sometimes it’s nice to just have a little bit of ham here and there. That’s what Rider Lite’s all about: a beautiful, zero-carb lite beer that’s not going to fill you up or challenge your tastebuds. Just a lovely fizzy, crisp beer that’s not bitter, but clean and fresh. It’s also around 78 calories and vegan, which are big pluses too. A great first step into the land of beer, or first and last. Serve it up with a couple of nice fish tacos and you’re golden (just like the beer).
