The Mr Consistent Legends Cocktail Mixers against a pink background

Just add a spirit to enjoy this Dan’s-exclusive line-up: The Hemingway Daiquiri, Charlie Chaplin, and Donn Beach’s Zombie.

Don’t get us wrong, we love making cocktails. We love the mixing, the shaking, the sourcing of all the ingredients. Big fans. HUGE. But, as much as we love it, sometimes we just want the damn cocktail now. It’s kind of like baking a cake from scratch (which we can do, btw, Mum). Sure, we can sift flour, measure chocolate, and remember to buy baking powder, but, boy does that cheeky Betty Crocker cake mix stare at you from the baked goods aisle after a long day. And that tub of icing? Forget about it.

The same goes for our wonderful Mr. Consistent. They make brilliant products from ultra fresh ingredients, already mixed and ready to go (just add spirit). We were lucky enough to do a collab with them earlier this year and it was such a success, it sold out. So now, they’re back with another wonderful Dan Murphy’s exclusive – the ‘Legends’ series, just for us (and also you). “We love our core cocktails, but we wanted to stretch ourselves a bit more,” explains all-round legend and Mr. Consistent’s Product Director Mikey Sebire. “We wanted to take our customers on that journey a bit further, and I think we’ve struck a really good balance of familiarity and novel with this range.”

So, what are the lucky cocktails our main man Mr. Consistent has settled on? “I think we largely wanted to make cocktails that we ourselves would be excited to drink,” explains Mikey. “There have been a number of legends through time that have been immortalised with a drink of their namesake, but these three were the ones we're drinking most at the moment. We’ve been guided by the cocktail first and the legend second. All three of these cocktails are exceptional expressions of what a cocktail should be. They're fun, they're well-balanced and extremely drinkable and they don't take themselves too seriously.”

So, drum roll please (*bangs hands on desk*), our three lucky and delicious exclusives are the Hemingway Daiquiri (yes named for that Hemingway), the Charlie Chaplin and Donn Beach’s Zombie. That’s one gin and two rum cocktails, and each bottle makes 10 serves.

“For me, rum is the spirit that’s closest to my heart, but I don’t think it’s always been portrayed in the best light in the Australian market,” says Mikey. “So I love the thought that we could play a role in opening the world of rum up to drinkers who may have historically ignored it.” Mikey’s predicting a summer of rum – specifically tiki-style cocktails, which makes sense as the team are also releasing a Piña Colada and a Mai Tai mixer, but more on that at a later date. This is all about the big three.

While the original recipes are far from simple, Mr. Consistent makes it actually convenient to whip up some of the trickiest cocktails. “Some of them in their original incarnations rely on multiple spirits or spirits that don't necessarily exist in your average liquor cabinet,” says Mikey.  “Our challenge is to create a drink that can be made to a bartender standard, still only using one spirit that is easily found and readily available.” We’re listening.

1. Charlie Chaplin

Named after the famous actor and filmmaker (can you guess who?) known for his silent films and slapstick humour, the drink behind the Mr. Consistent Charlie Chaplin mix is essentially a Sloe Gin Sour, hailing from the 1920s Pre-Prohibition cocktail era. The original is a tart, sweet and well-balanced mix of equal parts apricot brandy, lime juice and sloe gin, and is totally delicious. But truly, who has all of that in the cupboard? “Our mix toes the line of simple and complex as well as being playful and decadent,” says Mikey. “We wanted people to experience the sloe gin element of the Charlie Chaplin, so we introduced that sloe character into our mix, so the user can simply combine our product with their gin of choice and shake.”

2. Donn Beach’s Zombie

“A Zombie is one of the OG tiki drinks,” says Mikey. Created by Hollywood bar owner Donn Beach (famous for his bar, Don the Beachcomber) in 1934, this cocktail is a bit of a behemoth. “So much so that it’s been re-imagined countless times and with wildly diverse results,” says Mikey. “People that have tried a Zombie may not have tried anything that even closely resembles Donn's version.” Think big rum flavours, fruity sweetness, clove and delicate cinnamon – ”an almost cola-like character,” says Mikey. “Combined with rum, it’s about as perfect as a cocktail has ever been.”

This Donn Beach Zombie mixer is probably the most ambitious drink we’ve made to date,” says Mikey. “The blueprint we were working on saw us needing lime, grenadine, cinnamon, grapefruit, clove, ginger, nutmeg and bitters, along with a blend of herbs to recreate the character of the three different rums and Pernod in the original drink.” In true Donn fashion, the team also added pineapple juice to the mix, which Donn himself did later to his original recipe, to lend the mix more body in the absence of its signature blend rums. “We recommend mixing the Zombie with rum, my personal preference being a darker rum like Plantation Original Dark, for price and performance,” explains Mikey. “But it goes equally well with something lighter too.” It’s a perfectly constructed, very complex cocktail that embodies what tiki represents.

3. The Hemingway Daiquiri

What do you get when Ernest Hemingway walks into a bar? The Hemingway Daiquiri (ba dum tiss) *crickets*. No, but actually. The writer Ernest Hemingway, a big fan of Cuba and all things Cuban rum, walked into the famous El Floridita bar in Havana, and after sampling the frozen variety standard of the time, he famously said “I prefer mine with no sugar and double rum”. And the Hemingway Daiquiri was conceived. Why no sugar? Mr. Hemingway suffered from a hereditary case of haemochromatosis, which can lead to diabetes, so he often opted for no-sugar options. Of course, the recipe changed a couple more times, with the addition of grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur to be more palatable for the average person. “It's still largely reminiscent of its Daiquiri origins,” explains Mikey. “The base of rum, lime and sugar are all present and accounted for, but the addition of grapefruit and maraschino adorns the drink with an elegance and depth beyond the simplicity of its predecessor.” He suggests using a lighter rum to create a refreshing but also elegant and compelling drink. His picks? Try it with Havana 3 or a Bacardi Superior.
