A line up of Limoncello di Capri, Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila and De Luze VS Cognac

How about an L&T, T&T or C&T? This month’s picks are as tasty as they are affordable.

Are you straight-up bonkers? No? Well, in that case, you’re probably not drinking tonic water on its own. For most of us, the tonic comes out when it’s time for a gin and tonic, perhaps a vodka and tonic (if you’re that way inclined). Now, no shade to the humble G&T – they’re absolutely delicious – but there are tonnes of other tasty tipples you can mix with that tonic for an easy, breezy, refreshing drink. Who knew?

In fact, you may have spirits sitting in your cupboard right now that you never even realised were a perfect match for tonic water. And if not, never fear, I’ve got some killer suggestions for you at killer prices. Below, find three of my favourite spirits to mix with tonic. They’re all on My Dan’s member offer right now, so head in-store or online to nab each of these at stellar prices until 9 April.

1. Limoncello di Capri

Everyone’s gone bloody mad for limoncello of late and I can’t blame them – it’s ridiculously yum. Great on its own or in a spritz (or any number of excellent cocktails) limoncello is also mighty fine when it’s cut with some tonic.

This bad boy is made exclusively from Sorrento lemons on the Italian island of Capri. I love it because it strikes just the right balance between sharp citrus and velvety sweetness. The tonic turns this into a two-second cocktail – long and refreshing, bright and bubbly.

Try a 3:1 ratio – around 150mL of (ideally) Mediterranean tonic to 50mL of limoncello. Garnish with a lemon wheel and Robert’s your father’s brother.

Non-member price: $57.99

2. Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila

If you’ve followed this monthly column, I’m sure you’re well sick of hearing me wax lyrical about tequila, but hear me out: a solid blanco or reposado pairs so damn nicely with the natural bitterness of tonic. It’s my go-to bar order.

Olmeca has this beautifully smooth agave sweetness and loads of citrus notes, which makes it one of my faves for mixing Margies, but also ideal for pairing with tonic. Nabbing a 1L bottle for just $88? Well, that’s the cherry on top.

Try one part tequila to two parts tonic, and a healthy squeeze of lime or orange will really make things sing.

3. De Luze VS Cognac

Do as the French do and drink your Cognac with tonic. It has so much character and flavour that it can really hold its own in this combo, making for the ultimate little pre-dinner aperitif

This isn’t a time for top-shelf Cognac – go for something affordable but delicious – like De Luze VS. Rich, fruity and floral, it has a welcome complexity you don’t always find in younger Cognacs.

Tonic really brings out those dried fruit notes. Again, try a 3:1 ratio of tonic to Cognac, served in a giant balloon glass with fresh lemon slices.
