Christmas gifting is a sport – and some of us have been training for this moment. Can I run more than one kilometre without collapsing? No. But can I tell you exactly which excellent bottle you should buy for your in-laws, your boss, or your wildly unpredictable Kris Kringle? You bet.
This time of year is when the Dan’s crew thrives. We spend our lives tasting, debating, rating, sipping, decanting, arguing (politely) and generally over-thinking drinks. So, instead of leaving you to wrestle with the “What do I buy?!” panic, I’ve canvassed the team for the bottles they’re wrapping – and the ones we’re quietly manifesting into our own stockings. Think of this as insider intel from people who know their way around a bar cart: the best wine gifts, the perfect spirits for Christmas lunch, excellent last-minute host presents, and the bottles you should absolutely claim as “highly recommended by experts”. Boy, have they rallied.

My festive personality type is “turn up with something fun”, and these Four Pillars Gin Punch cans are exactly that. They’re bright, summery, fruit-forward and perfect for anyone who appreciates a ready-to-chill, ready-to-drink moment. I love gifting these to friends who host picnics, park hangs or impromptu backyard drinks – the kind of people who like flavour without fuss. These taste like a punch you’ve laboured over, without any of the effort.
I’m still deep in my amaro era, and this artichoke-based beauty is top of my wish list. Faccia Brutto is a very cool Brooklyn outfit making Italian-style spirits with a New York edge, and this artichoke amaro is their take on Cynar – just more lifted, aromatic and modern. It’s herbaceous, earthy and bittersweet in the most elegant way, and it makes an incredible Spritz, works as an after-dinner sipper, and looks stunning on a bar cart. J’aime (pictured bottom left), the eldest of four sisters, takes her role as “self-appointed Head of Sibling Gifts” extremely seriously. This year, the group is going big for their dad, Richard, with Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky. “This is the Scotch our family celebrates with – and also the Scotch we remember people with,” she says. Blue Label earns that status: it’s velvety, layered, full of dried fruit, spice and gentle smoke, and blended from some of the rarest casks in the JW reserves. “We're both celebrating and remembering this Christmas, so it’s a really special bottle for us.” As far as meaningful gifts go, this one is powerful, personal and top-shelf in every way.
On J’aime’s wish-list? Tequila. Always. She’s all about Matthew McConaughey’s Pantalones Tequila Organico Blanco. Why? “Well, it’s Matthew McConaughey – but also it’s bloody delicious.” This organic, additive-free tequila made from fully matured Blue Weber agave is bright, citrusy, smooth and has a gentle sweetness you don’t always find in tequila. She’s already planning a summer of cocktails from The Dan’s Cocktail Book: Batangas, Margs, Palomas, Ranch Water and beyond. “Basically, if it has tequila in it, I’m making it.”
Antony (pictured bottom middle) has a simple Christmas ritual: “I always buy Dad a bottle he’ll open at Christmas lunch.” This time, it’s The Dead Arm Shiraz, one of South Australia’s most iconic wines. It’s big, brooding, complex and built for serious occasions. Made from gnarly old vines affected by a fungus that “kills” one arm of the vine (hence the name), the fruit is incredibly concentrated, delivering dark berries, spice, earth and firm tannins. “There’s nothing better than this South Australian legend for lunch,” he says. Antony really knows his wine, so when he suggests a bottle, we listen. “I can’t go past anything Philipponnat if I’m treating myself,” he says. The Philipponnat Rosé – a Champagne beloved by sommeliers for its precision and finesse – is made using the maison’s signature pinot-forward style. It’s giving red cherry, citrus peel, rose petals and fine, chalky acidity. Mornington Peninsula pinot is having a serious moment, and Rob (pictured top left) is backing Stonier – one of the region’s OG pioneers. “People are loving pinot at the moment,” he says, “and there’s nothing more exciting than a killer Mornington pinot.” Stonier’s expression is classic coastal Victoria: fragrant red cherry, raspberry, dried herbs and silky tannins. “They consistently over-deliver on quality,” he adds. This is the kind of gift that works for literally anyone: parents, hosts, colleagues, in-laws – a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
As for what Rob wants? One of the Barossa’s most powerful, luxurious shiraz wines — Glaetzer Amon-Ra. It’s plush, dense and beautifully structured, offering black fruit, spice, dark chocolate and a long, velvety finish. “There’s something transcending about opening an old-vine Barossa shiraz,” he says. “It’s the style that started me on my wine journey.” His plan? “The cork would be out shortly after receiving it… into the decanter, everyone gets a glass, and there’s a slice of ham to go with it.” Perfect.
Around these parts, Colleen (pictured top middle) is known as “Wine Mom” (she’s a serious vino expert and she was raised in Kentucky). Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio – one of Italy’s most iconic white wines – is her go-to host gift. Crisp, elegant and ultra-refreshing, it’s known for its bright citrus and clean, dry finish. “Whenever I go to a party this time of year, I want to bring the host something to say thank you,” she says. “Who doesn’t love a crisp pinot grigio?” It’s a bottle that works with food, heat, family chaos and everything in between, which is why it never lasts long on the table.
On the receiving side, Colleen’s answer is instant: “I will NEVER say no to Champagne as a gift.” Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut is a floral, delicate, beautifully balanced Champagne with notes of stone fruit, citrus blossom and brioche – elegant but totally approachable. “You always need to have a bottle in the fridge ‘in case of emergencies’,” she insists. A bottle like this turns any small win into a celebration.
For Finlay (pictured bottom right), the cost of entry to Christmas lunch is to find his mum a new gin to try. This year, it’s Ukiyo Blossom – a Japanese gin distilled from a shochu base. “Like seemingly everything from Japan, this is perfectly crafted,” says Finlay. There’s a real harmony here between the traditional juniper and citrus components alongside the cherry blossom and yuzu. And then there’s the bottle: a gradient glass stunner that Mum can keep to pop flowers in after she’s done with the gin.
Like myself, Finlay’s current fixation is amari, and new-kid-on-the-block Manfredi is the hero of his obsession. His pick is their Bergamotto. Made using a historic Calabrian method that cold-infuses bergamot peel, it lands somewhere between citrus liqueur and refined bitter digestif. “You get the most perfect balance of fresh citrus, flowers and sugar,” says Finlay. “If you like limoncello but find it too sweet, this takes it to a more sophisticated next level.” And yes, the aesthetics matter. “It’s giving major Aesop-on-the-bar-cart vibes in one of the most aesthetically pleasing bottles I’ve ever seen. Someone please buy it for me?!”
