A world-class wine list in one of Australia’s key producing regions teamed with comforting pub grub adds up to a local watering hole that attracts everyone from farmhands to winemakers.

Why you goIt’s impossible to imagine Margaret River without Settlers Tavern (or, as the locals call it, The Tav). For more than four decades, this red-brick watering hole has loyally served its community, from the surfers and farmers who wandered in on opening day in 1977 to the sea-changers, young families and travellers who make up present-day Margaret River. While watering and feeding guests is the name of the game, Settlers is also a live-music venue, making it the perfect dinner-and-a-show double act. Although the pub’s demographic and size make a performance from Taylor Swift unlikely, a healthy calendar of live rock, blues and reggae keep the crowds entertained.
Why you stayA visit to this benchmark country pub can unfold in various ways. Perhaps it starts with a round out on the veranda – one of Margaret River’s best places to park yourself on a sunny day. Then it’s into the bistro for something to eat and more drinks before a night-cap in the front bar and catching the end of the footy. However your Settlers experience plays out, count on a winning mix of attention to detail – from the breadth of the drinks range to the wines served in restaurant-quality glasses – and country-casual service from easy-going staff who clearly love living and working in the state’s South West.
What drink to orderAlthough Settlers offers considered drinks across the board, wine is unquestionably its strong suit. Then again, perhaps that’s to be expected at a pub in one of Australia’s key wine regions. Even so, owners Karen and Rob Gough have a knack for sniffing out Margaret River’s next big thing while also stocking bottles to turn the heads of a discerning clientele that includes many a winemaker. The by-the-glass options are especially strong – Art Series cabernet sauvignon, anyone? That said, Settlers never forgets that it’s a country pub, so beer is another of its calling cards. Famous multinationals and craft favourites dominate the packaged beers, while tap beers bring together well-known Aussie brands and Settlers’ own Margaret River Ale Company brews.
What to pair it withIf only every neighbourhood local did pub grub like Settlers. Open nightly, the bistro is one of the township’s most dependable diners and seeks to comfort rather than challenge guests. In addition to the counter-meal classics (Chicken schnitzel! Fish and chips!), vegetarian options and Asian specials such as laksa are also on offer. Fish tacos and slow-cooked American barbecue – you may have seen, or smelled, the imposing black Yoder smoker on the way in – hint at the Californian roots of co-owner Rob Gough.
Don’t leave withoutAnother bottle of that killer pinot noir you had with dinner. Settlers’ licence allows it to sell takeaway alcohol to customers – handy to know in a town where bottle shops often close early. It’s also worth noting that the pub’s award-winning cellar has plenty of hard-to-find local wines and choice imports, making a shopping spree at Settlers about more than just convenience. The bar also sells a range of Settlers-branded merchandise including T-shirts in aid of the local volunteer fire service.
Who to takeAnyone and everyone. Even the kids (although the little ones need to be supervised by adults when walking through the front bar or seated in the bistro). It’s a broad church that congregates at Settlers, which only underscores its standing in the community. While farmhands and labourers downing pints cut conspicuous figures out front, high-vis clothing is optional for after-work – or maybe post-wine tour – refreshment. Although the volume can rise a couple of decibels on weekends, Sunday to Thursday are usually a lot less raucous. Drop by during the week to get a sense of how Margaret River likes to unwind, drink and dine.
