Life really is a beach at this polished, multi-pronged, Mediterranean-accented drinking and dining destination, which capitalises on its killer Bondi location in style.

Why you go

When it comes to a place like Promenade Bondi Beach, the question isn’t so much why you should go, but more like why the heck you wouldn’t. What we’re talking about here, after all, is a 900-square-metre restaurant, courtyard bar and coffee kiosk wedged into the south-east corner of Bondi Pavilion – a heritage-listed architectural landmark, all graceful archways and Spanish terracotta-tiled roofs overlooking the country’s most recognisable stretch of sand. Venues at sites like this are almost always occupied by rip-off merchants concerned with capitalising on the views as opposed to first-class food and drinks. Not so in this case.

House Made Hospitality group, the brains behind Sydney CBD’s swanky Hinchcliff House, has created three spaces that cater to all comers at all hours of the day. While the takeaway window pulls quite a fine espresso, you’ll want to settle in for a longer innings. The choice is yours – out in the al fresco Front Yard Bar, with its director’s chairs and stripy brollies, or in the Dining Room, where a creamy colour palette and opulent finishes make for a timeless vision of coastal elegance. Either way, it’s a winning proposition.

What drink to orderCatering to a broad range of tastes and budgets is a tough gig, but Promenade’s drinks list does a bang-up job of it. Cocktails are a surefire way to start the party, especially the combination of gin, mint and sparkling coconut water dubbed the Neoprene Dream, which couldn’t possibly be more Bondi if it tried. Then again, that could also be said of the Frozen Margarita laced with passionfruit and tongue-tickling habanero-agave syrup. As for the wines, there’s a whole lot of action packed in across three small pages, with European show ponies sitting alongside classics and new-wave upstarts from home soil. A well-rounded tap-wine program adds interest around the edges, too, with affordable drops by low-input makers such as Gilbert Family Wines in Mudgee on pour. And if it’s a cleansing ale you seek, a frothy from Bondi Brewing Co maintains the local focus.

What to pair it withWhat you eat depends on where you sit. Outside, the Front Yard Bar keeps it nice and casual with a smart all-day carte of timeless hits such as yellowfin tuna crudo, chicken-liver parfait, fish ’n’ chips, a chicken burger and pizzas. The Dining Room, meanwhile, is a slightly more buttoned-up affair, with a Mediterranean-meets-modern-Australian slant that’s perfectly pitched to the audience. For best results, go hard on the snacks and the seafood – the puffy flatbread with whipped pecorino butter is unmissable, as are the crisp-fried sesame brioche bug toasts and the scallops with buttermilk and kombu-seaweed oil.
Make it fancyValue accounts for so much of Promenade’s magnetic appeal, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities to splurge. A bottle of Ruinart Brut Champagne (still a steal at $235) is a wise way to begin. This is peak rosé and white wine territory, too, so the offer of chalky, grapefruit-bright Bandol rosé ($185) or steely, mineral-rich Chablis ($225) feels bang on the money. More of the spirit type? A nip of Bladnoch’s punchy single-malt whisky ($80) or Clase Azul’s rich reposado tequila ($40) should more than suffice.

Who to take Mum and Dad will love it here, and so will Nan and Pa. That goes for the pickiest of all your mates, your kids and probably your dog, too. In fact, it’s impossible to imagine anyone finding fault with Promenade – especially out-of-towners who, on a bluebird day, are guaranteed a front-row seat to Sydney at its finest.
