Whether you come for the standout Italian-accented wine list or the tasty renditions of European classic dishes, it’s good times all the way here in chic old-school surrounds.

Mosconi: A Food-Focused Wine Bar in Brisbane
Why you goIs Mosconi a food-focused wine bar or a wine-focused eatery? Depends on who you’re asking. Either way, if you’re here at the curved timber bar, or sitting around one of Mosconi’s marble- or timber-topped tables, you’re onto a very good thing. If you’ve come for the food – tasty renditions of mainly Italian and other European classics – then you’ll drink exceptionally well. If you’re here to test-run the excellent wine list, you’ll leave raving about the house-made pasta and planning a return to go through the rest of the menu. Whichever way you slice it, Mosconi is a win-win.
Why you stayIf Mosconi’s bistro-style tables and chairs spread along the pavement don’t pique your interest as you walk by, then its lovely European interiors will. It’s not tricked up – the main room has old-school white walls hung with gallery finds and old family photographs, patterned tiles underfoot and tasteful sage-coloured timber paneling by the bar. It all feels stylishly timeless. With a quieter location, just off buzzy James Street, Mosconi draws a less vibey crowd that cares more about what’s on the plate and in the elegant stemware than who is dining nearby.

What drink to order

The inspiration for this venue’s name came to owner Mark Rotolone after a memorable wine-tasting lunch with pioneering Italian winemaker Chiara Boschis, who was showcasing her acclaimed full-bodied red wines made with the nebbiolo grape. Fittingly, the 250-plus bottle list here features several vintages of Boschis’s Mosconi Barolo and, if the budget allows, they’re pretty fine options. But it’s all quality here, so you might also be tempted by an Eighth Day Granny Smith cider from the Granite Belt, or a different take on an Aperol Spritz putting Italy’s bitter Cynar to work with prosecco and orange. Or one of Mosconi’s cocktails – a Montenegro Sour with amaretto, egg white and cherry bitters, say, or a Margarita made with a blue agave tequila by La Gritona

The wine list here is lightly weighted towards Italian drinking, but not exclusively so. There’s plenty to delight those who admire biodynamic and organic makers, too. “It’s a reflection of the wines I like – and I don’t just drink Italian wine,” says Rotolone. “I like to include wines that are a good example of a particular variety and to also have an alternative variety, so people can try a mix of both.”

What to pair it withChef Catherine Anders’ food is the real deal – mainly Italian but underpinned with deft classical technique. Try her tortellini filled with flavoursome slow-cooked duck. These pasta parcels arrive in a slick of molten butter and under a snow of pecorino cheese, with char-grilled peaches. Perfect with a glass of Giocato pinot grigio from Slovenia, made with organic grapes raised just across the border from Italy. Or a plate of tender Fremantle octopus on a simple white-bean purée and match it with a different take on sauvignon blanc from Flowstone, a Western Australian winery. Having the veal cotoletta? A glass of garganega, a white variety from the Veneto in northern Italy, could be just what you need.

Don’t leave withoutChecking out the mezzanine level. The building is a repurposed World War II igloo, or Nissen hut, but you’d never know until you see that curved ceiling up top. It would be an even bigger mistake to go home before getting stuck into some of the house pasta. It doesn’t need to be winter to enjoy the pappardelle coated in lamb shank ragù with salsa verde and properly aged parmesan. But if you prefer a lighter, summery touch, you can’t go past the linguine with tiger prawns or Moreton Bay bugs.
Who to takeSpending Saturday trawling the James Street boutiques? Lunch at Mosconi guarantees there will be at least one credit-card transaction you won’t regret later. It’s also a lovely romantic destination for date nights, while friendly service makes it a no-brainer for celebratory family get-togethers.
