Why you go

Hotel Lombardo – is it a pub? A pizza parlour? A bar? What we can tell you for sure is that the Guinness is perfectly poured, the cocktails are classics, and the potato pizza is among the best in Melbourne. Sitting on a stretch of Sydney Road not typically known for its nightlife, this Italo-American-leaning spot has quickly earned a place in the heart of many a local. Opened in late 2022 by Travis Lombardo after he returned from a long stint in Brooklyn where he worked as a fashion photographer and hospo all-rounder, it’s the type of joint he’d always dreamed of creating back home.

Head into Hotel Lombardo and you’ll find the bar, booths and beer garden packed with diners of every ilk. And you’ll be greeted by the attention-grabbing scent of wood-fired pizza, the sound of pool balls smacking across the table and the enticing energy of people having a good time.

The small but mighty pizza menu is built on the strength of Lombardo’s slow-fermented dough and classic toppings given a left-of-centre tweak. The Hawaiian, for instance, leans more Italian, with ham subbed out for mortadella that’s baked crisp, while the hot chips are served with a side of aïoli spiked with white pepper. Delicious.

Why you stayLike any pub worth its weight in pots, Hotel Lombardo is the type of place you can settle in at the bar for a few hours (or more). Bring one or six of your nearest and dearest, and commandeer the pool table, or head to the vine-lined beer garden for an afternoon of Negronis and arancini rice balls laced with Italy’s spicy ’nduja sausage. Leaning more relaxed than racy, the atmosphere is that of a friend's backyard if they happen to be a great bartender with a killer pizza oven.

What drink to orderThe drinks list runs easy and fun, with chilled reds, crisp Italian whites and classic cocktails – Negronis! Margaritas! Aperol Spritzes! Everyone from your mum to your latest Hinge date will find something to enjoy on the menu. If you feel overwhelmed by choice, you can’t go wrong with a jug of the Lombardo lager, a crisp brew and the perfect start to a night's festivities.
What to pair it withWhen it’s made on a 72-hour slow-fermented dough that leaves the oven with a chewy, speckled crust, pizza is definitely the go-to on the menu. The pepperoni is a hit, but the one you really need is the potato and garlic – built on a base of roasted-garlic béchamel sauce and topped with crumbled potato, it’s a true textural win. Ask for a side of basil ranch sauce for crust dipping.
Why we love itHotel Lombardo was barely a few months old before it cemented its place in the hearts of the local community. From the mismatched pendant leadlights to the vintage plates and wood-panelled booths, the entire fit-out at Hotel Lombardo is warm, cosy and welcoming.

Regular’s tipGrabbing a spot at the bar next to the pool table is dinner and a show. Watch as locals battle it out over the baize or spend your night observing the bartenders make a shocking number of Spicy Margaritas. If you’re in a large group, the sunny beer garden is the place to be.
Don’t leave withoutIf Guinness is on tap, it’s begging to be ordered, and the team at Hotel Lombardo pour a mean pint. While Guinness might not be your first choice when you think about pizza pairings, the creamy malt sweetness and hoppy bitter hit make a great match with a slice of vegan mushroom pie.
