The rooftop at Gigi in Melbourne's Thornbury opens for summer

The cherry on top of Thornbury Italian stallion Umberto Espresso Bar is this small, summer-only rooftop that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Why you goWith very little street-level signage, you need to know where you’re going to get to Thornbury rooftop bar Gigi. The only way in is through the bustling dining room of sibling Italian restaurant Umberto Espresso Bar and up the steep, colourful stairwell. But once you (finally) make it to the top and step out onto the tucked-away rooftop, you’ll find a bar that, while compact, certainly packs a punch. It’s completely open-air, with treetops and rooftops for days, and a fit-out that doesn’t distract from the view. And while it shares the same Italian DNA as Umberto downstairs – and Joanie’s Baretto across the road – it’s a little more freewheeling and a little less bound by tradition. Especially when it comes to cocktails; aperitivo hour isn’t run-of-the-mill here.
Why you stayOne word: sunset. And if you have any doubt, a quick glance at Gigi’s Instagram page should dispel it. It’s one thing to watch the sun go down from an inner-city rooftop surrounded by skyscrapers. But it’s another to watch it with an entirely uninterrupted view of the horizon, as the sky gets set alight with radiant hues of orange and yellow. It’s walk-ins only and there are only a few dozen seats, so make sure one’s yours for sunset.

There is a wide range of drinks at Gigi Rooftop in Melbourne
What drink to orderFor those familiar with the Umberto family of venues, the flavour combinations on this cocktail list could seem left-field. But trust the process and order something unusual. The Italo Disco is a party-starting mix of vodka, limoncello, salted raspberry, chamomile and lemon that is more harmonious than it sounds. The Can-Tini is a melon-inspired creation made with vodka, rockmelon liqueur, Cocchi Americano (a bitter, citrusy Italian aperitivo), lemon, ginger and almond. For the less adventurous, there are tinnies of typical Italian lager Peroni Red and bottles of Furlan prosecco.
What to pair it withYou won’t find any of Umberto’s beloved signature dishes up on the rooftop,  although you can have your fill in the espresso bar before ascending the stairs. Instead, the Gigi menu is small, snacky and smashable, while mostly keeping with the brand’s all-Italian approach. You might find the pinsa marinara or picante – their take on this light and airy style of pizza – or seared scallops with Calabrian chilli butter and nduja crumb, or even a cheeseburger on a brioche bun.

Why we love itGigi is so much a part of the Umberto Espresso Bar family that it literally sits atop the restaurant. But where Umberto zigs, Gigi zags. From cocktails to contorni, Umberto is all about the Italian classics; it’s the kind of place where you sip a Campari soda while waiting for your spaghetti carbonara. But Gigi, while still maintaining some Italian influence, isn’t afraid to mix it up. The Sgroppino (a vodka and prosecco-based cocktail starring sorbet) is flavoured like a pavlova, while there’s a Peaches & Cream Negroni.
Regular’s tipIf you’re looking to soak up the sun on an unseasonably warm winter’s afternoon, Gigi isn’t the place. It’s a seasonal bar, so you’ll find it closed outside the summer months. But that’s something we love about it: it encourages you to make the most of Melbourne’s (sometimes fleeting) summer, spend a few balmy nights with mates in an intimate open-air space, then look forward to the bar’s return after another long winter.
Don’t leave withoutReally take a minute to appreciate the view. When you’re out and about, it can be easy (and enjoyable) to be so consumed in your conversation, cocktail, canapes (or all of the above) that you don’t look up from your table. Don’t do that here. Gigi may be located smack-bang in the middle of suburbia, but gaze beyond the thousands of rooftops in Melbourne’s north and be rewarded with a stunning vista of the Macedon Ranges.
