The full-time content creator and jewellery designer knows a thing or two about picking a date spot with 10/10 vibes, food and drinks.

When she’s not gallivanting around Europe sourcing inspiration for her fine jewellery company, designer clothes and snacking on escargot, you can find Katherine Denton studying to be a gemologist and sharing a typical day in her Melbourne life with her 87K TikTok followers. That’s a lot of people who want to know what you’re doing, wearing and eating! And it’s no wonder, because Katherine, who’s also a full-time content creator, has an enviable wardrobe, timeless style and her finger on the pulse of everything that’s cool. This just so happens to include the best date-night spots in Melbourne – and lucky for us, she’s shared a few of her recommendations.

For Katherine, a great date starts with a super dirty Belvedere Martini with three olives, or a glass of Chablis in a venue with good vibes – and if it’s a spur-of-the-moment date, even better! “My idea of romance is spontaneity. I appreciate and love when things happen unexpectedly, without prior planning or any expectation – a super last-minute dinner on a random Tuesday evening at a favourite restaurant is absolute heaven to me,” she says. As for Katherine’s relationship status? “I’m in a relationship. A pretty serious one actually, I’m married!” she says. “It doesn’t really change anything. Louis and I have been going to the same restaurants since the day we met. We’re always up for anything and love trying new places.”

Although a first date is far behind her, Katherine says for anyone picking a venue for a first date, it’s all about the vibe. “It’s crucial. You want to go somewhere that’s busy, but not too busy! You want a little privacy in-between tables, and drinks and food are obviously super important. A place with sharing plates is a great idea because it makes it a little more casual and relaxed,” Katherine says. If you’re worried about committing to a meal, take Katherine’s advice and see how just a drink goes. “It’s a nice way to see if you actually like the person without the commitment of an entire dinner. And if all goes well, you can grab a bite to eat after or plan for dinner on the second date,” she says.

When it comes to those first dates, Katherine says nerves are to be expected, but don’t let them get the better of you. Her tip? A cheeky drink while you get ready. “Look, I’ve never been against a glass of wine or cocktail while getting ready – it can be so nerve-racking!” Katherine says. “I also recommend, if given the choice, picking a restaurant that you’ve been to before – that way you already know what you’re walking into and you’re in familiar territory.”

Okay, first date or not, here are some ideal spots, according to Katherine. Take note and reserve a table.

The courtyard at Clover in Richmond, Melbourne
Up first is Clover, a cute, modern bistro and wine bar in Richmond that’s all about celebrating natural wine and food cooked solely over fire. Dreamed up by Lyndon Kubis (also of The Moon in Collingwood and Prahran’s The Alps) and chef Charley Snadden-Wilson (ex-Etta and Embla), Clover is everything you want in a smart-casual wine bar. Slide into one of the chic curved booths in the front window or shimmy out to the back courtyard to sip a pét nat in the late arvo sun – whatever you do, make sure you order the honey bread. “I love Clover because it’s super relaxed and the perfect spot for drinks and nibbles,” Katherine says. And is it a hot date night spot? Absolutely! “It’s intimate and casual, the staff are so lovely and you can’t go wrong with anything you order from the menu. I love their prosciutto, market fish and roast chicken dishes paired with a glass of Collette Pinot Noir.”
Katherine perfectly sums up this next venue: “Marion is always good. You can’t go wrong here!” You’ll find her and her husband Louis dining outside at this Fitzroy institution if “Melbourne is behaving”. “Marion is all about great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere. You’re also in a good spot to walk over to another wine bar after dinner, if the date is going well!” she adds. A punchy menu with a Mediterranean influence (think marinated sardines, warmed flatbread with soft, creamy fromage blanc cheese and a half-dozen natural oysters with a mignonette sauce) will keep you happy even if the date is a flop. Katherine suggests also trying the crudo with yuzu kosho and pickled fennel, the pipe rigate with spicy vodka sauce and the O’Connor 500g rib eye. As for a drink, she can’t go past a Chablis. A by-the-glass list is sometimes hard to pin down, mainly because it changes daily, sometimes hourly, depending on the whims of the sommeliers and the tastes of the crowd. But that’s all part of the charm.
A busy scene inside Smith St Bistro in Collingwood
On to Collingwood’s Smith St Bistro next. If you’re looking for something super romantic this is it, according to Katherine. “I love how dark and mysterious it is. It also has the most incredible French food – you don’t feel like you’re in Melbourne here!” she says. It could be a great spot if you a) need a romantic date venue and b) can’t get over to Paris like everyone else on your Instagram feed. It’s a win-win. An ideal spot for a special night because it’s quiet, private and intimate, Smith St Bistro ticks many more boxes beyond its beautiful interiors – starting with a Francophile-themed cocktail list including concoctions such as La Rue, Riviera Spritz and Parisian Spring Punch on offer. “They do a great Americano here,” Katherine says. “On the food front, we always get a few dishes to share – the standouts are the vol-au-vent d’escargot and the steak au poivre,” she says. “And, the souffle framboise – allow 20 minutes for this one.” Take a seat in one of the intimate banquettes lined up for see-and-be-seen dining, or follow Katherine’s lead and snag a spot up on the mezzanine. “It’s pretty special”.
Tucked behind an unassuming graffitied garage door is where you’ll find Lilac Wine. From the man who brought you Hazel and Dessous (that’s Nathan Toleman), comes a humble and homey neighbourhood wine bar in a long brick warehouse where the lights are low, the vibes are high and the vinyl plays loudly. Oh, and there’s a disco ball for good measure. “I love how Lilac Wine is in the middle of nowhere. You wouldn’t expect a wine bar behind a garage door in the industrial streets of Cremorne,” Katherine says. In the kitchen, Michelin star-trained chef Kyle Nicol serves up an eclectic menu that celebrates local, seasonal and native Australian produce. “I love the woodfired sourdough bread with garlic oil, the pork scotch with creamed lentils and nettle salsa verde, duck fat potatoes with kefir cream and the leaves with Champagne dressing,” Katherine says. As for the wine list, it’s extensive. Like 150+ bottles extensive. It’s all about heroing local, artisanal, small-scale growers and producers who aren’t afraid to go against the winemaking grain. Ready to book a table? Us too. “Pick a spot near the couches for a cosy first date drink and bite to eat.”
