The best beers from Australia and the rest of the world, all in one place? Yep, these are the best spots in the country to drink beer, as voted by Dan’s Daily.
Pull up a stool at the massive bar or retreat to the leafy courtyard at Mr West (pictured left) to enjoy a local craft beer or international rockstar. Beer fridges divided by style fill an entire wall, and each bottle and can from the bottleshop is available to buy and drink at the bar for a small corkage fee. On tap, you’ll find more than two dozen brews, each worthy of a repeat visit.
In the city, it’s hard to look past Benchwarmer, a beloved beer hall that exclusively stocks limited-edition craft beers. With tables on the footpath and a beer garden out the back, Benchwarmer is also dog-friendly, inside and out. Known for its rotating tap list and delicious Japanese-style snacks, it’s a winner for post-work beers, date night or a fun night with friends.
Just outside of the city on Collingwood’s Easey Street, warehouse bar Paradise Alley is also good for groups with regularly changing tap beers that are largely crafty and sourced from lesser-known local heroes. Proudly pouring beers for buffs, they also cater for the sober, sober-curious and low-alcohol crowd.
Former PM Bob Hawke is practically synonymous with beer, and at the newly opened Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre, you’ll find a craft brewery that’s a throwback to his ’80s heyday. More than just a production site and taproom for Hawke’s Brewing Co, this place is also the ultimate beer-lover's destination complete with an in-house Chinese bistro (pictured right) and Richie Benaud cricket commentary playing on loop in the loo. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but delivers seriously good times on all fronts.
Shady Pines Saloon in Darlinghurst is a hidden honky-tonk bar with big-name American beers and plenty of Aussie craft tins. Whether you like browns, ambers, reds and stouts or lagers, wheats and pales, they’ve got every colour of the rainbow. House beers are only $4.50 every single night of the week from 4-6pm – get amongst it.
Carefully chosen craft beers and cabinets full of cheese and charcuterie clamour for attention at Stone House. Try a locally made ‘4:21’ ale (named for the time NT government workers are officially able to knock off), or work your way through the impressive list of craft beers from Belgium to Norway.
Of course, that’s all just the tip of the iceberg. Check out our full list below.
