Put a berry twist on the classic Marg, blitz it with ice and make it your summer staple.

About the cocktail

It really is tough to beat a Margarita. With its salted rim and sour lime juice, the tequila-based tipple has long held a special place in the world’s collective hearts. It’s the most ordered cocktail in the US and, according to research done in 2008 by the beverage industry, Americans consume some 185,000 Margaritas per hour. The vast majority of them are probably enjoyed on National Margarita Day, which falls on February 22 each year.

As much as we love the original Marg, there have been plenty of variations on this Mexican magic over the years, from the Spicy Jalapeño Margarita to one of our favourites, the Strawberry Margarita. With just five ingredients, this fresh Strawberry Margarita recipe is super simple to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

The addition of strawberries brings a berry sweetness to the icy cocktail, making it the perfect choice for warm summer days with friends – this recipe conveniently makes five drinks at a time. Sweet and sour unite, in the form of sugar and lime, to balance the final taste, and because this is a blended cocktail, you’ll have plenty to go around at a party or as a palate-tickler before a dinner party kicks off. Just don’t be surprised if your guests request another round.

Dan’s top tips

If strawberries are in season, always opt for fresh fruit to guarantee that true strawberry taste. But be sure to wash the berries and cut the stems off before tossing them in the blender, otherwise you'll end up with solid bits in your drinks. If it isn't strawberry season, you can use frozen strawberries as a good alternative, allowing you to enjoy a Strawberry Margarita throughout the year.

An important consideration when mixing a Strawberry Margarita is the type of tequila used. Be sure to use a good tequila, if possible, and if you're after a touch of smoke character then perhaps consider using mezcal instead.
