A Margarita on a chair with a bag of limes

Love a Marg? Take your pick from our favourite recipes that let you put your own twist on this classic cocktail.

Did you know there is an International Margarita Day each year? Yep, every February 22. And we think few drinks deserve celebrating like a frosty Marg does. The best thing about mixing them up at home is that you can make them exactly how you like. Spicy? Sweet? Fruity? Alcohol-free? All of the above? We have the recipe right here for you. But before that, here are some golden rules for making the holiday-in-a-glass that is a Margarita.

First, the best Margs are going to come from the best tequila (you might like to steal these bartenders’ top picks). Tequila only has to include 51% agave spirits to be called tequila, but when it is made from 100% agave, this is pure tequila with no additives. Purists will tell you it tastes better. Patrón Silver Tequila or Don Julio Blanco Tequila are both 100% agave and perfectly smooth.

Second, Margs are great as a perfectly made individual drink as well as a batch. There is no wrong way, just make sure you use a dedicated recipe for each (rather than tripling a recipe for one to make a batch, or dividing a batch recipe to make one) as the rations needed are different. The same goes for a Frozen Margarita. It might be tempting to just add ice to your usual Marg mix and blend, but frozen Margs need different quantities, so use a recipe. Luckily we've got plenty for you here.

Because Margaritas do take some time (especially if you’re juicing all the limes by hand), remember that you can make up your mix the night before. This way it comes out nice and chilled, straight from the fridge.

And third, big ice – always. Small ice melts fast and dilutes your drink, making it taste watery and a bit meh. Who wants that? No one. So repeat after me: big ice always.

You’re ready. Let’s go.

1. For those who like to go by the book: Classic Margarita

You like your movies black and white, and your Margaritas traditional. Never forget, “cold” is as important an ingredient to a Margarita as lime juice. Essential.

2. For the detail-oriented: Tommy’s Margarita

Almost more authentically “Margarita” than the classic recipe, a Tommy’s Margarita subs triple sec for agave nectar, a sweetener made from the same plant that produces tequila. Expect a taste that’s a touch more honeyed and cleaner than the original.

3. For those who do things differently: Blood Orange Margarita

Make it a Marg, but with a zippy twist. Here, a lick of blood orange juice and a dash of bitter red liqueur lifts the classic cocktail to something even more delicious. Think added bite and complexity. Delish.

4. For those who love their hot sauce: Spicy Pineapple Margarita

It’s tropical, it’s got a helluva kick and it’s also downright pretty – the Spicy Pineapple Margarita is made for a crowd and those who don’t leave home without their hot sauce. This will get the party started.

5 and 6. For the hot summer sippers: Frozen Margaritas

It was hot to be frozen in the ’90s, and like a lot of trends from that decade, it’s hot again. Frozen Margaritas are perfect for balmy evenings or when you want to show off a little to your guests. Icy drinks pull a crowd. They just do.

7. For the sugar-conscious: Skinny Margarita

Look, we don’t really believe in guilty pleasures – life is worth living and all that jazz. But, the best thing about mixing up drinks at home is that you can make it exactly as you please. And if you don’t happen to dig sugar, or can’t have too much, then this Marg is for you.

8. For the Piña Colada fans: Pineapple and Coconut Margarita

Sometimes you just can’t decide if you feel like a Piña Colada or a Margarita. Or is that just us? Next time that indecision hits, this delicious hybrid is the way forward. It brings the best of both cocktails into the one glass. Winning!

9. For the creatives: Chilli Coconut Spicy Margarita

Concocted for us by the co-founder of innovative beauty brand Ultra Violette, Ava Mathews, this recipe goes for the kick of a spicy Marg, but makes it smooth with coconut. Think creamy, hot and fresh. What a combo!

10. For the spice-lovers: Jalapeño Margarita

This spicy mix has almost taken over as the Marg of choice in recent years. A jalapeño kick is the perfect complement to the classic tart Margarita. It is possible to go too hot though, so follow the recipe, and as you get good at mixing them, adjust to taste.

11. For the go-getters: Zero%* Margarita

An alcohol-free Marg is always a good idea, especially when the ratios and flavours are as beautifully balanced as our own expert-tested recipe. You won’t be missing anything in this cocktail – a perfect way to kick off a night.

12. For the hack-lover: Pre-mixed MargaritaWhen you want a Marg, but not the effort of squeezing limes, Lexington Hill Margarita on the Rocks is like a bartender in a bottle, ready to mix you the perfect tart Margarita. All you have to do is pour it over ice and enjoy.
