Now you can have your cake and drink it too with this indulgent cocktail.

About the cocktail

Everyone has at one point or another shovelled spoonfuls of Nutella straight into their mouth. It’s inevitable. But how good would it be if you could fancy-up that Nutella serve? This one is for all you self-proclaimed ‘dessert people’ out there. Introducing the Nutella Martini. Yes, you heard that right, the Nutella Martini.

We won’t lie, a Nutella Martini isn’t the most sophisticated of drinks. We both know James Bond would never be seen sipping a Nutella Martini. But this fun, chocolate cocktail was never meant to be chic, high-class or even overly presentable. This cocktail was created to be enjoyed (guiltily or not) whenever you feel like it.

We put it on par with the Irish Coffee , Grasshopper, White Russian, Espresso Martini, and even the Affogato (just don’t tell Italy). It’s just a fun cocktail that’s sweet and enjoyable to drink. It’s like the mocha of cocktails.

So, when’s the best time to whip out this Willy-Wonka-esque recipe? We don’t want to tell you when and where to drink this Nutella sensation, but we do think it would make a cracking dessert substitute or accompaniment.

Picture this: you’ve just finished main course at your dinner party. You could make a complicated chocolate parfait for dessert, but that’s a bit too-hard-basket. You could reach for that sticky port, but that’s not quite impressive enough. Why not shake up a few Nutella Martinis for your guests? Trust us, you’ll be a hit.

Watch: How to make a Nutella Martini

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons of Nutella, plus more for glass rim
  • 20mL hazelnut liqueur
  • 20mL Irish cream liqueur
  • 20mL vodka
  • Garnish: Nutella and crushed hazelnuts

Method

  1. Spoon some Nutella into a low, flat dish, and the crushed hazelnuts into another
  2. Dip and roll the edge of the glass into the Nutella to evenly cover the whole rim, then dip it into the hazelnuts, and set it aside
  3. Add the Nutella, hazelnut liqueur, Irish cream liqueur and vodka to a cocktail shaker
  4. Add ice, then shake the tin vigorously before straining into your pre-prepared coupe or martini glass

Dan’s top tips

This might just be the least pretentious drink recipe out there, so don’t be afraid to add any additional ingredients you want. Love marshmallows? Chuck them in. Fangirling for peanuts? Sprinkle them on top. It truly is the rocky road of cocktails. Anything goes!

However, to (technically) keep it a Martini, make sure you serve it in a martini or coupe glass.
