Rosenvale VineyardsOld Vine Reserve Shiraz 2018
About this product
In 2018 we barrel selected fruit from 2 of our family vineyards. The Vine Vale Sands vineyard which is grown on heavy white sandy loam over brown and red clay. The vines are trained to the Rosback system with lift wires and cane pruned.
The Rosenzweig vineyard which is grown on sandy brown loam over red clay and a deep limestone mix. The vines are trained to the Rosback system with lift wires and cane pruned. This year mother nature loved the cane pruning and yields were spot on.
HARVEST NOTES
Drier soils combined with warmer than average October and November days October 2ºC above average in BV and November 1.1ºC above average in BV meant the vine canopies grew quickly; flowering well and setting a good number of bunches. January and February were warm and dry, with very warm temperatures in February. The Indian summer of March and early April was ‘the icing on the cake’, with average temperatures, without extremes, perfect for finishing off vintage.
WINEMAKING NOTES:
Destemming only of fruit with 15% Part wild ferment, 3 Open fermenters, 7,11 & 8 days on skins, pumped over and plunged twice daily, open cage bag pressed cultured yeast added for ferment. Once complete we must extract the juice from the skins, and we do that with our computer controlled open cage air bag press to barrel. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation then we rack and return to barrel for maturation.
All barrels are tasted for style and blended for bottling.

Vintage 2018

Deep red/purple colour, with a smoky-oaky, dark-chocolaty aroma, the palate dense and super-ripe, with slightly bitter tannins. Licorice galore. It veers a bit towards overripe but is certainly a hedonistic style that will have many fans. Sumptuous stuff!

From vineyards planted in the ‘60s, open-fermented in three batches (various yeasts and cap management), 18 months in French oak (15% new). This is a lovely shiraz, James Rosenzweig has seized the opportunity of the '15 vintage with both hands, and with clever winemaking has produced an elegant wine with some characters normally from cooler climates. There are spicy notes, and lifted fruit courtesy of a ride on the back of fine tannins.
