Dry, Full Bodied style of ShirazBarossa Valley, AustraliaIt was back in 1859 that Saltram founder, William Salter, first cleared some land at his Mamre Brook homestead to plant Shiraz vines. 3 years later and William released his first wine and simply called it 'No 1 Shiraz'. More than 150 years later and Saltram is still making one of Australia's premier Shiraz and calling it 'No 1'. This 2005 comes from a year that has gone on to become a favourite of many due to the wines concentration and balance of flavours. Ageing gracefully, the 2005 can be readily enjoyed today or laid down for a further decade or so.

Full bodied red wines have a noticeably textural mouthfeel with bold, complex flavours. Often deeply coloured.
Dry wines have no trace of sweetness at all.

Medium deep purple red: great colour for an '05. Charcoal, charred timber smells. Tannic, too. Very harsh tannins, bordering on bitter. Dense, thick, boiled-down kind of palate texture and flavour. Way over the top. They've thrown a forest of oak at this. Grippy tannins and unsubtle.
