Light to very light yellow. Oaky nose tallies with the slightly forward colour. Lots of barrel influence. Varietal fruit struggles to keep up. Firmish dry palate, with some oak phenolics. Pleasant wine but suspect it'll be better in a year or so. Needs time and should age beautifully, building complexity.

Walsh has reviewed a run of these Wallcliffes so it's time I entered the fray. This wine is 100 percent barrel fermented/matured (all French, 35 percent new) and is grown on vines planted in the early 1970s - though they were grafted to sauvignon blanc/semillon in the early 1980s. It's an ageworthy white. You notice the oak. Not so much in the flavour, as in the wine's texture. It's soft and creamy. It otherwise tastes of gravel and thistles, lemon rind and grapefruit. It's classy all over: pure, long, soft and yet distinct. A burst of bitey flavour/acid darts through the finish. A classy white.
