Vintage 2011
96 points
Contrary to the rest of SA, 2011 was a tremendous vintage for McLaren Vale, especially if you appreciate the elegance and finesse that a cooler-vintage brings. This wine a great testament to that fact. Intense black fruits, pastille and cedar aromas. The palate is volumous, savoury and spicy, with meaty beef jerky-like characters, vanilla-pod adding further complexity. It's still the classic rich and juicy red we know and love from Wolf Blass, but this vintage has also delivered a unique and appealing touch of lightness. A few years in bottle has brought positive integration and seamlessness.

Deep colour; it spent 15 months in a mix of old and new French and American oak barriques, giving rise to a fragrant and expressive bouquet of black fruits, spice and cedar nuances. The palate really sings with dark berry fruit, oak and tannins the supporting orchestra. Right up there with the best Black Labels.
