Gee-whiz, this is good. Multi-faceted and luscious at once. Peppered and generally spicy, clovey, set with deep black cherried fruit, a little smoky, a little meaty. It’s bright and brooding at once; it’s complex but firm. There’s some sweetness to the oak and some bitterness to the aftertaste, both of which are entirely positive. Seriously impressive wine.

This is not firing on all cylinders. Judd comes across as a little dusty, and the fruit expression is somewhat muted. Hints of camphor, sweet-spicy oak, but by no means an oaky wine – it’s rather restrained with hazelnut-skin tannins and plenty of acidity. Some sweet cherry fruit pops up on the lean palate, so perhaps this is still finding its groove.
